Ma Peche’s Milk Bar Has Pastrami Croissants!?

Ma Peche

MomoMidtown aka Ma Peche (56th btw 5th+6th) has been switching it up lately, offering new sandwiches and making the switch to cake truffles-an item that is hot on the black market of my office. It was during the procuring of said truffles that I got my first chance to try their new croissants. There are four new ones, one sweet and three savory. Since mine had to make do as my lunch, I ended up trying one of their savories: rye croissant with pastrami, sauerkraut, and Russian dressing! It takes croissants to a whole other awesome level.

Momfuku Rye croissant

Yes, the actual croissant dough is rye. I don’t know how they do this, but it’s complete with caraway seeds and buttery goodness. I could have just eaten this and been happy, but they had to go all crazy and make it a sandwich. But it’s not really a sandwich, not really a croissantwich, because they bake the good stuff in there! Like magic!

Inside the Pastrami & Rye Croissant

One bite lets you in on the well-seasoned, tender pastrami slices and not-too-sour sauerkraut awaiting you inside. The big inside chamber allows for enough of each to really feel like a sandwich. The creamy Russian dressing doesn’t overwhelm anything else, helping the sum be greater than the parts. I know some would rather have more pastrami, less ‘kraut, but I think that would take it over a meaty edge. Getting all this for $6 is fine by me. It definitely feels a bit decadent, but it’s significantly smaller than normal pastrami sandwiches, and capable of hitting the spot when you’re craving one.
