Free Scharffen Berger Cupcakes Are Totally Worth Seeking Out

Scharffen Berger Truck

Earlier this week we brought you the news that Street Sweets is partnering a number of businesses and bringing free treats to the streets on three different trucks. Yesterday I caught up with Truck #3 (aka the Scharffen Berger Chocolate Adventure wrapped truck) and I have to say, the free chocolate cupcake alone makes it worth checking out.

Scharffen Berger Freebies

Hitting the truck sometime after they arrived on 46th street after 10am, I had a mere two minute wait for chocolate cupcake goodness. I was able to snag one for myself and one for my colleague. The cake was dark and moist and the frosting –made from Scharffen Berger Dark Chocolate, natch–was rich and fudgy. These were full size cupcakes, so you get a good sized treat for your wait.

On my way back from lunch at around 1:30, I spotted the truck in it’s afternoon spot on 49th street and there was a line about 25 people deep (and looked to be mostly midtown lunchers as opposed to the clueless/lucky tourists I spotted in line that morning). Still the line was moving fairly quickly.

Today was supposed to be the last day of the Scharffen Berger giveaway, but according to twitter Street Sweets has extended the cupcake give away to Friday. Huzzah!

You can find them today at:
42nd St bet 5th & 6th Ave: 10am – 11:30am
Park Ave bet 52nd & 53rd St: 12pm – 3pm
59th & Lex: 3:30pm – 5pm

They just arrived at 52nd and Park on Park (east side of the street, on the corner). There was a small group gathered to greet them and they explained the promotion. It will probably be pretty busy.

Picked one up at around 12:20, very short line. It’s sitting on my desk now waiting to be gobbled up with my afternoon tea.

Cupcake consumed. Agree with the comments about the cake being just a tad dry, creating too fine a crumb. The frosting was delicious – but a little too “fruity” by itself. However, eaten together, it’s a great cupcake – something I would buy. Kudos to them for creating a cupcake that’s just sweet enough but not overwhelming (so many places make the frosting and/or cake so sweet that it makes you break out in a sweat).

  • I just got one…the cake itself I don’t really like. To me, it’s a bit too dry and heavy. I like the fluffy and light cupcakes.
The frosting is nice…not too sweet…and very chocolately..fruity..

  • I agree mkim. The cake itself was forgettable, but that frosting, holy shit.

  • My coworkers just went and informed me that the cupcakes are no longer available..they gave out a few pieces of small chocolate pieces..which isn’t bad either considering the prices of these chocolates.

  • went at 12:45pm, got a cupcake.

Holy shit is right! That icing is freaking awesome.
You aren’t kidding that it is worth seeking it out.

The cake is not that bad…a little dry.

Only 1 minute wait at 52 + Park.

  • Scharffen Berger dark choc & Anchor Liberty Ale…

The only two good things to come out of San Francisco since the gold rush

  • yesterday afternoon, was able to score one @ hudson & king then stroll to carmine & 6th to pick up a pumpkin whoopie pie. both were quite good, although my cupcake didn’t have as much yummy frosting, but hey, how can i complain since it was free?
