PROFILE: Midtown Lunch'er "Felicia"

Every Tuesday we turn over the site to a different Midtown Lunch’er for his or her recommendations for the best lunch in Midtown. This week it’s Felicia, a logistics manager (wha?) who loves pizza but can’t stand chicken. (I think we might be able to get behind that…)

Name: Felicia

Age: 35

Occupation: Logistics Manager

Where in Midtown do you Work?: Garment Center

Favorite Kind of Food: Can you say cheese please, anything with cheese! I love pizza(I am a Brooklyn girl)

Least Favorite Kind of Food: Chicken, we had a disagreement years ago, so we broke up! Actually I got sick twice and never ate it again!

Favorite Place(s) to Eat Lunch in Midtown: My new obsession are all these great new trucks! My favorite is Mexicue. The short Rib tacos are the best! They usually park near Bryant park once a week. A few weeks back I ventured over to the Schnitzel & Things truck on 46th and let me tell you! I see what the buzz is about! As far as favorite pizza places go nothing will ever beat Brooklyn pizza in my eyes but for midtown here are my picks, it is all about the mood. If you want a thin crust with lots of yummy combo’s for toppings I suggest Lazzara’s (on 38th btw. 6+7th). If you are in the mood for a cheesy salty inexpensive slice the $1.00 pizza at 2 brother’s on 8th avenue is the way to go!

“Go-To” Lunch Place You and Your Coworkers Eat at Too Often? We have two fan favorites here. At least once a week one of us has a Pick-a-Pita (on 8th Ave. btw. 39+40th) moment and the next thing you know we are all craving it and have to run down there for a falafel platter. If we aren’t eating falafel then we are heading to Ginger’s on 7th avenue (btw 37+38th) for some Szechuan dumplings.

Place(s) you discovered thanks to Midtown Lunch? Schnitzel & things I owe all to you guys, I also use the site when I have no idea what I want to eat, I pull it up and get ideas from whatever article is up on the home page.

If you could work anywhere (just because of the lunch) where would it be and why? That would be Italy just so I can have a very long leisurely lunch where I can eat cheese, drink wine and people watch!

Is there anything you’d like to ask the Midtown Lunch readers? I bake cupcakes and I cater them to parties and events, I am just starting out and have become obsessed with trying cupcakes all over the city and comparing them to mine, so I would like to ask everyone, who do they think make’s the best cupcake’s around midtown?

Got an answer for Felicia? Put in the comments. And, as always, if you want to be next week’s Profiled: Midtown Lunch’er (or know somebody you’d like to nominate), email editor@midtownlunch.com.

  • ” … who do they think make’s the best cupcake’s around midtown?” Both apostrophes are unnecessary.

    • thank god for spell check and for whatever they miss, thank god for you!

I am the worst!!!!!! Officer I didnt mean to over use the apostrophy! please do not arrest me! ;)

      • Also there is no apostrophe in “2 brother’s on 8th avenue is the way to go.” Yikes! And then you’ve got “thin crust with lots of yummy combo’s” — yikes! Terrifying. Your grammar logistics are miserable.

      • Ike,
Thank god my logistic””””s skill””’s don’t rely on my outlook spell check or my own grammatical errors. It is great to be human, you should try it some time!

You definitely hit a nerve, probably because I can’t stand people that put others down so they can feel superior. Do you know what my job entails? Do you know me at all? Your snide comments to a total stranger lead me to believe that you have a bit of an issue in your own life and you are lashing out here. Did you have something to say about my choices for lunch or do you just like to belittle woman so you feel important?

  • I’m not too too big on sweets, but I’m partial to Buttercup Bakery on 2nd and 51st for cupcakes.

  • The cake isn’t too dry and the frosting won’t decay your teeth or too chalky.

Buttercup Bake Shop is my fav. Forget Magnolia.

    • Buttercup Bakery’s cake from the cupcakes is way too dry. Honestly, there really isn’t a great place for cupcakes in Midtown, maybe besides Amy’s bakery. The cake is soft, moist, and the frosting is good. The best cupcake I ever had in Manhattan was on 116th st somewhere. I lost the business card though.

      • I had them when they are dry and other times moist at Buttercup. The problem is their consistency. They are better than Magnolia fo’ sure.

  • Sorry sweetie but you are about 5 years too late on the cupcake trend.

  • At least the comments are relatively tame so far…

I don’t think there are good cupcakes around midtown, tbh. Try Robicelli’s… try to keep the sobs down as you realize you can only hope to ever be as good as theirs :)

    • Yes! Robicelli’s is sold at Lily O’Briens. Buy em on Mondays and Fridays (fresh delivery), they’re the best.
Culture Espresso Bar also makes baked goods in house and sometimes has some interesting cupcake-y things.

    • actually I couldnt agree more! I have tried tons of cupcakes and the only ones that I can say I really loved are The Robicelli’s cakes. I think they are out of this world and it is the only cupcakes I have tried that I couldnt come up with a negative thing to say!

I wouldnt say I sobbed when I ate them. Most people dont sob at the perfection of others! They instead strive to be their own kind of perfect!

  • Women are usually not great barometers of taste. Uggs and Crumbs being evidence of this. They also still love cupcakes. She works near me. I’ve never had the $1 pizza b/c the line is always too damned long.

  • Not in midtown, BUT Two Little Red Hens had the best cupcakes in the world. Literally the world. Orgasmic red velvet ad brooklyn black out. Their cookies and cheesecakes are amazing too. Crumbs is disgusting to begin with, I honestly don’t know why they are so successful. Magnolia is only surviving because of Sex and the City.

  • I think the Treats Truck has amazing cupcakes (and cone cakes!). Best of luck with your cupcake business.

  • FREAK OF THE WEEK

  • I had Crumbs about 5 years ago on 40th. I needed to kill some time and saw huge cupcakes in the window.I dont remember it being bad or disgusting. It was just a cupcake, nothing more , nothing less.

  • sorry – there are no good cupcakes in midtown!

  • So what’s good in Midtown???

  • the cake part of crumbs cupcakes arent bad…

  • *isn’t bad

  • At the suggestion from someone on ML, I tried Crumbs’ black and white cookie. It was awesome. I also had one of their muffins and it was very good too.

Anyway, I tried the most amazing cupcakes at the NYC Food & Wine Festival this past weekend. Called Baked By Melissa. They are mini (size of a quarter) but were delicious. It’s in SoHo but I think they deliver.

  • Ahh…my specialty. I am also a cupcake fanatic.

Tingers….you are positively incorrect darling. Two Little Red Hens ARE in midtown! Dean and Deluca sells them. There is a branch near Rock Center (48 5/6) and across from the Port Authority. They are $5. They are expensive. They are divine.

Dean and Deluca also carries Sage sometimes, from Queens. They are awesome. They also carry Kyotofu ones..they are good, but I like icing on my cupcakes, see?
And here is a little secret. Lately, I have been into the ones Dean and Deluca makes themselves. They are really, really good. They are also half priced during coffee happy hour, 4-6pm.
I happen to like Magnolia, in midtown. They are inconsistent though..sometimes they are dry, sometimes they are good.
I like Cupcake Cafe, in midtown. But since they moved to their new spot on 9th, they are frequently dry now. They used to be divine. They used to be my favorite dessert on the face of the planet.
    I like Sugar Sweet Sunshine.
    I like Buttercup Bakery.
    I like Butter Lane.
Amy’s Bread, on 9th, has em..but they are forgettable.
Martha’s Bakery in Queens are ok, but not great.
Baked in Brooklyn are good, not great.
Burgers and Cupcakes has forgettable ones, but they are cute.
I don’t like Billy’s Bakery all that much.
    Pinisi is boring.
I am not a big fan of Cupcake Stop.
I hate Crumbs. They are disgusting.
    I hate Little Pie Company’s.
    I hate Babycakes.
    I hate Junior’s.
    I hate Street Sweets.

Right now, my favorite is Everything Frosted in Chinatown…right around the corner from WoHop. Absolutely amazing. Hop a train and check it out. I would crawl over broken glass to eat one of these.
    :-)

Chowhound and various websites have long lists of the best cupcakes in NYC.
These gals have a nice site:
    http://cupcakestakethecake.blogspot.com/
The bottom line is everyone likes different things. You just have to try them all to see which you like. :-)

Yes, I have cupcake addiction. Ain’t that sweet.

    • They maybe in Midtown, but I refuse to get them there. They are sold for $5.00!!!! At their bakery they sell them for 2.75. You could get like, double the cupcakes!

    • I would have a serious cupcake problem if Butterlane or Chickalicious ever opened in Midtown. I generally don’t like sweet stuff, but those guys make some good cupcakes.

      • Chikalicious might still be selling at the Market in the 42nd St Hyatt. It’s between that, Robicelli’s, Butter Lane, and Baked for me.

    • Whoa. Obsession, thy name is chowsue.

Crumbs isn’t horrible. Babycakes is aight but not for everyone.

    • I love Everything Frosted, too! So tasty. Really unique flavors. Have you had Robicelli’s via Lily O’Brien’s? Good tip on the Dean and Deluca half price!

  • I was in LA last weekend and was shocked to come across a Crumbs bakery. My friend then told me that a Magnolia Bakery had just recently opened up as well. Too bad that with many great cupcake spots in LA, they get stuck with two mediocre NYC cupcake chains.

The best cupcake I’ve had in NYC is from Sweet Revenge. The best cupcake I’ve had ever is from Trophy cupcakes in Seattle.

    • Really you liked Sweet Revenge? They look fun, but I thought the frostings were way too sweet and the cake part to tough. They weren’t moist enough for my liking.

      • I haven’t done the whole NYC cupcake crawl. Just Sweet Revenge, Magnolia, Crumbs, Baby Cakes, and a few others that were not memorable at all. Sweet Revenge has been the best so far though. I had the Crimson and Cream and the cake was moist and the frosting sweet. Crumbs cake has no flavor, and I left Magnolia underwhelmed. Babycakes was bad on a whole other level. Have you ever had cardboard covered in frosting?

      • If you let babycakes cupcakes sit out until room temperature, the frosting becomes the consistency of melting gum. Stringy and gross.

      • Babycakes is for the health conscious and those restricted to a gluten-free diet. Cupcake fakeout won’t replace fats and sugars.

  • My favorite is ‘2 girls 1 cupcake’

  • a friend of mine worked as a logistics manager for an apparel company. still don’t know what he does. something to do with making sure stores get their stuff on time, tracking containers overseas, handling returns, just plain making sure the goods get to the stores on time or they lose money. and collecting all the sales orders.

  • I clearly have an issue since I enjoy Crumbs. What exactly is it that I shouldn’t be liking? I can see criticism for being too sweet with the icing.

    • From the Crumbcakes I’ve had, it tastes like they use the same few cupcake bases, and impart all the flavor using the icing/frosting. Personally, I want the flavor to be shared between the two parts.
