Souvlaki Truck Bringing Greek Street Food to the Streets
Sure, we have shish kebab on a stick from random hot dog vendors here in Midtown, but that’s a far cry from the real deal Greek souvlaki you get from carts in Astoria. And ever since Michael Psialkis told Details Magazine that his favorite street food in NYC was those very souvlaki carts, we’ve been secretly hoping that one day Midtown would get its version. Well it appears as if that day may have come. Over the weekend a new Souvlaki Truck hit the streets of New York City serving up (you guessed it) Greek style souvlaki. The owner told us they’re planning to take things slow for now…
“We are definitely looking at Midtown for lunches, as soon as we ramp up. We’re planning a slow launch this week…mainly downtown in Soho, East Village and Lower East side…afternoons, evening and late night until we’re ready for Midtown (not to mention scoping out the parking).”

More variety is always good, but I’m with Wayne here, lamb is a prerequisite for anything Greek. I don’t care if every single chicken and rice guy has lamb….you’re Greek you should have lamb!

Pork is actually the most “Greek” souvlaki choice, but lamb is always appreciated.

Inspired by this post I got a stick from the cart Psialkis suggests on my way home last night. I think I might slightly prefer the cart at 31st ave and Stienway in front of the Baby Gap. It seems like both places (and a third which is my late night choice) charge $2.50 for cart food in Queens served by old Greek pensioners. As others mention, it’ll be intersting to see if they can pull off a $1.50 option from a midtown truck.

As a lad who grew up on the stuff I can hardly tell you how excited I am, but I have some bad news. With all the calories, once the truck starts hightailing it to the LES or wherever it goes it just might be a good idea to put on your joggers and follow them.
In the meantime, we’ve pulled out the menu so we can salivate together. Here’s to smashing paper plates in Manhattan. Yiasou (all you Greeks out there know what that means….)

I do wonder how small it might be since the prices are a bit cheap for the city. Hopefully at least comparable to a kati roll for their pita.Too bad it isn’t in Midtown just yet or near my office. :P

Carnegie John’s souvlaki are $1.50 also. But yea, the souvlaki w/ fries combo for 2.50 is pretty cheap.

For the record, Traditional Greek Souvlaki is PORK. Lamb souvlaki was created for religious alternatives for pork. Don’t be a hater – this Souvlaki GR truck is a great idea and I think it will be a huge success! Pork souvlaki is yummy.
