Variety Cafe Celebrates Five Years (Mostly) In Business

I’m not sure if any Midtown Lunch’ers still eat at Variety Cafe, the big generic deli on 48th (btw. 5th and 6th), considering its rather odious presence on this site over the years. On my way to lunch yesterday, however, I noticed that they are celebrating their 5th Anniversary by slashing the price on their hot and cold buffet from $7.49/lb to $5.99/lb (Monday-Friday). Unfortunately, it doesn’t apply to their “salad bar for fat people,” and you know, there’s the whole DOH thing to worry about. I stopped in just to see what they had to offer, and besides the usual stuff all these delis have, there were some shrimp stuffed mushrooms. Proceed, if you must, but do so with caution.

  • Not going to knock any reason to give a discount, but can any old time Lunchers weigh in on the whole five year anniversary thing? I swear they’ve been there longer than that as Variety Cafe–maybe it’s been 5 years since they renovated? My old boss used to eat here all the time (and I picked up salads for her upon occasion) and it’s been over five years since I switched bosses…

  • It’s been longer than 5 years.

I left my previous job in 2005, and by that point we were going there for a few years.

Perhaps it’s under new management as of 5 years ago.

Also, wasn’t this reported already? This is old news. It’s been going on for a few months now.

  • Variety Cafe is so mysterious!

  • These large Korean delis are mostly partnership. anyway, nothing mysterious about them other than the fact that they own a nice manshion sized home in Alpine, NJ.
