Eggs Travaganza Cart’s Grilled Cheese with Chorizo and Bacon FTW!
Grilled cheese with tomato holds a nostalgic place in my lunchtime heart–it was my tried and true high school cafeteria lunch option and the only good thing that our cafeteria made with the exception of fried dough pizza (yes, in my school district fried dough pizza somehow got the pass as a “nutritious meal”). When I first read about the Eggs Travaganza Cart’s new lunch time offerings, my attention went straight to the Grilled Cheese with Chorizo, Tomato and Bacon. Hello, lunch!
The Grilled Cheese with Chorizo, Tomato and Bacon at the Eggs Travaganza Cart goes for $5 –which at first blush might seem a bit expensive for a grilled cheese from a cart, but this sandwich might be more aptly named a “grilled chorizo and bacon sandwich with cheese and tomato” on account of the generous meaty filling and the price tag includes chips. A similar sandwich with bacon OR tomato and minus chorizo and chips goes for $4.50 at my local generic deli, Variety Cafe.
The sandwich came on a multi-grain bread that flavorwise kind of reminded me of challah with it’s hint of a light sweetness–an inspired sandwich base for those of us who like sweet and salty combos. Chorizo plus bacon plus melty cheese equals lunch bliss in my book. The only thing that would have made me happier would be the addition of a pickle on the side. This is definitely a grilled cheese that I will make a return trip for.
Given that most carts have grills, I’ve always been surprised that more of them don’t offer grilled cheese as an option. It’s easy to make, people like it, and it seems like it could be a high margin sort of product–especially for a cart like say Frites N Meats that carries plenty of fancy cheeses and buns and extras and doesn’t offer vegetarian options. Now that Eggs Travaganza has fulfilled my grilled cheese from a cart fantasy, I’m now on the hunt for a cart that serves onion rings. Along those lines, luncher Apikoros18 has a great recently revived thread going in the forums called: I wish they served it from a Cart in Midtown.
