2009 Readers’ Poll: Best Fast Food Hamburger

It’s time for the 3rd Annual Midtown Lunch Readers’ Poll. Your nominations are in, and between now and the end of the year I’ll be asking all of you to vote for the best Midtown Lunches in a whole range of categories. You can only vote once per category (so choose wisely), and official results will be posted after the new year.

Let’s kick this thing off with a big one, shall we? Best burger. With a full year under its belt, did Five Guys do enough to overtake perennial favorite, the Burger Joint? Can the deep fried awesomeness of the schnitzel burger overcome the fact that you can only eat it once a month (at most.) Whichever spot wins, one thing is for sure… now that the Shake Shack is on its way, this could be the last year this award is up for grabs. The nominees are:

  • I vote for Hillstone, which kicks all of their asses collectively!

  • i am ashamed to admit that i haven’t to any of these places.

  • The only burger I haven’t eaten and refuse to go out of my way to purchase is Schnitzel. That’s not to say I wouldn’t walk 11 blocks to get Carnegie John’s, which I have.

So I’d like to say Carnegie John’s > Five Guys > Burger Joint > Goodburger

  • Odd. I’ve had all of them. The schnitz is the only one of them that left a lasting impression on me. The rest are slightly better than mcdonalds.

  • Correction, CJ’s also left a lasting impression, but I prefer schnitz over CJ.

That said, I think I should campaign to get some interest in the Kosher Oasis burger as well. I had one today. It may be a bit pricy ($6 for just a burger), but it was freakin tasty.

  • Ugghh Carnegie John was going head to head with 5 Guys at the beginning. Doesn’t look like he stands a chance now. 5 guys = hype.

  • Agreed. The only lasting impression I had from burgerjoint or 5guys was “overrated”.

I enjoy Five Guys, but there’s no way I can vote for it as a Midtown Lunch.

Don’t care if there are free peanuts, I have better things to do at 12:30PM on a work day than wait in a line that’s 25 people deep for a cheeseburger.

  • I had a Carnegi John burger a month or so ago, and was distinctly disappointed. Needless to say, I voted for someone else.

  • i refuse to see burger joint win

I went to Five Guys last night, and while some may think they are underrated, I am very impressed with how they manage to cook the burger well done (which I like due to raw meat concerns) yet leave it so juicy and tasteful.

  • 5 guys is underrated?!

Burger Joint is the overrated one for me.

    I go: 5 Guys > Carnegie Johns > SchnitzBurger > Burger Joint

    never had Goodburger

How could this not include burger from Blarney Stone?

  • ^ Odd. I stopped by today at Blarney Stone. They are advertising their burger being “Voted Midtown BEST BURGER.” It’s on their business card and written on the chalk board outside. I didn’t find any other burger polls online. I don’t think it compares to the Five Guys that opened nearby, but I have to admit that it’s a bit better than the last time I had their burger. I’m guessing they are feeling the heat from the competition and are trying to step it up. I’m calling shenanigans on being voted midtown best burger though and trying to pass it off as the winner of this poll.
