At Some Street Carts White Sauce Equals Mayo
For those of you in denial (our Happy Hour Correspondent Mamacita for one) here is proof that not only does the “white sauce” from your favorite street meat often contain mayo, but sometimes it’s just mayo: “I was just at the Steak Truck (on 47th and Park) and the guy in front of me ordered a combo over rice with white sauce and hot sauce. He got served his food with the typical squeeze from a white bottle and red bottle. But here’s the interesting part: when I then asked for ketchup and mayo on my burger, the Steak Truck guy pulled out the SAME white bottle he had used for the halal combo and spritzed my burger with it. Proof that white sauce = watered down mayo at a lot of truck and carts. -Will (aka Lunch’er WaitingForBajaFresh)”. Once again I’m going to file this under things I wish I didn’t know.

Woah woah woah, careful here. Who says it was mayo? Maybe their “mayo” is really white sauce, and not the other way around.

It’s also possible that they don’t have any mayo and gave him sprays of white sauce instead?

I noticed at Kwik Meal that they use empty supersize Friendship sour cream containers for stuff. I beleive their white sauce tastes a little different that the others..may be sour cream.

it could have been that he just gave you the thing closest to mayo.
When i worked in starbucks – someone asked for hte dragaon fruit tea, without correcting htem i gave them passion tea. I was too bored to go through the correction…

@HaveFun: Kwik Meal’s white sauce is more like a Tzatziki sauce with sour cream – way better then any other carts white sauce.

I make my own Tzatziki, it calls for strained sour cream, onions, and unholy amounts of garlic.

The Famous 56th/6th street cart is definitely just mayo. Maybe they a little bit of stuff in, but tastes like pure mayo to me.

NYC carts = mayo-based, which makes sense, a gallon jar of mayo is probably much cheaper than yogurt or sour cream and when unopened, keeps a lot longer than dairy products.
Seems like every time I have a gyro at a street fair, RU grease truck, Greek restaurant, Jersey boardwalk, Philly, etc. it’s more the sour cream/yogurt-like combination.

LWL – mayo would last longer than sourcream or yogurt?
rachel – one of my complaints at SMP2 was that some of the bland chicken mixed with the whitesauce (mayo) tasted like chicken salad (made with miracle whip).

Cucumber and dill.I still prefer tzatziki over regular halal cart white sauce. Can’t hate on mayo though. It’s an important ingredient for other foods.

@adamprato: Yeah, shredded cuke. It doesn’t really have much taste, but it hold it all together and gives good consistency.
