PROFILE: Midtown Lunch’er “Teresa”

Every Tuesday I turn over the site to a different Midtown Lunch’er for his or her recommendations for the best lunch in Midtown. This week it’s Teresa, the girl responsible for the amazing Wah Mei Pork Chop Fast Food delivery story last week. I wanted to see what other tricks she might up her sleeve!

Name: Teresa

Age: 26

Occupation: QA Analyst (just started 6 months ago and still don’t really know what I do exactly).
Where in Midtown do you Work?: TheMarkets.com around 53rd and 7th

Favorite Kind of Food: So far, my favorite is street food in Taipei. The food is so tasty and cheap. Whenever I visit Taipei, I make sure to have noodles almost everyday. Also, they have their famous soup dumplings at Din Tai Fung. The dumpling skin is much thinner than what I get here in Chinatown/Flushing. This summer I’ll be visiting Japan, so I hope to find some new favorites.

Least Favorite Kind of Food: Mushrooms, sea cucumber, abalone, clams, oysters, mussels, most of the “exotic” seafood in a typical Chinese banquet.

Favorite Place(s) to Eat Lunch in Midtown: Tonkotsu or Curry Ramen at Men Kui Tei on 56th btw. 5+6th (I found out sadly they don’t serve Mabo Ramen for lunch), Fried Chicken Curry Udon at Teriyaki Boy (on 7th Ave. btw. 48+49th), Beef Soft Tofu Soup at Cafe Duke’s (on 51st btw. 6+7th), and the unlimited salad at Stage Star (on 55th & 6th).

“Go-To” Lunch Place You and Your Coworkers Eat at Too Often? Cafe Duke’s, Bocca, China Gourmet (although I never eat there), Street meat at 53rd and 6th and the Crown Deli.

Place(s) you discovered thanks to Midtown Lunch? NYC Cravings Truck, even though I wish I never had their unsatisfactory pork chop over rice. The $5 May Lunch Special at Shilla, which was very good. Szechuan Gourmet, but I have yet to try it

If you could work anywhere (just because of the lunch) where would it be and why? Tokyo so I can eat ramen everyday, Rome so I can have pizza, gelato and pasta everyday, or Taipei so I can have beef noodle soup everyday.

Is there anything you’d like to ask the Midtown Lunch readers? My old job was close to Cafe Zaiya and Yagura (both on 41st btw. Mad+5th), so I miss the takeout Japanese food. Is there anything like this near 53rd and 7th? Cafe Duke’s does NOT count. If there are none, what’s the closest place to my office? I’m willing to travel.

Hmmm.  Pro Hot Korean is kind of like the Korean version of Cafe Zaiya, and that’s on 56th btw. 5+6th.  Not *as* good, (and the selection isn’t as large as Zaiya) but it’s good enough.  And close to your office.

Anybody else have a recommendation?  Put it in the comments. And as always if you’d like to be next week’s Profiled: Midtown Lunch’er (or know somebody you’d like to nominate), email me at zach@midtownlunch.com.

  • Always a good idea to go public with the admission that you have no idea what you do for a living after half a year at your current job. Especially in this economy.

  • Katagiri works, if you’re willing to walk (59th btween 2nd and 3rd).

They have onigiri, japanese salads, sushi platters, little teriakyi plates and tempura for takeout, in addition to an array of Japanese grocery stuff on the shelves in the back. They’ve even got frozen shabu shabu meat–cubicle hot pot, anyone?

  • i QA too! (not just my food, but for work too)

  • the above comment by Rudy McBagel is probably one of the meanest things I have seen listed even if it is meant in good fun or as part of the hazing process for all profiled ML’ers. Had I been a new reader on this site, I think many may be taken back by that comment.

  • Amazingly Enough, I have seen Mr. McBagel making even ruder comments. I am sure many of us can attest to that. (Oooh, I use the term Mr. LOOSELY)

Second, Fred, the song is good but I am confident we can do better…..

  • Well, I want everyone to be able to sing along – think of all MTL’ers worldwide filling Wembley Stadium to capacity, singing that song, with mamacita and Wayne directing. All of the profilees would march around the stadium’ outer track, waving to the assembled crowd. If some profilees couldn’t make it, we’d hire celebs like Liv Tyler to take their place. We’d put it on youtube, it’d be viral in a week, I’d play it for Wilma on the record player using a bird with a newly sharpened beak for the record player needle, etc etc. Eventually, it’d serve as the 30 second commercial for Midtown Lunch at the halftime of the Superbowl.

or, eh, uhm, I could work on a new, grander idea

  • Y’know, I read Teresa’s profile and thought: here’s the first profile in some time relatively immune from the mean comments we’ve all grown to know and love. She speaks intelligently about food and about herself, submitted a reasonably flattering photo and seemed to have no bizarre or unusual personal habits. Fools such as I are often deluded, however. Sure enough, there’s Mr. McBagel and Fred somehow finding something aberrant to say, however irrelevant to Teresa’s profile. Zach, maybe we need to give the profile feature a rest.

  • I’m the new food troll here. I suggest NoPickles remove the stick up his butt, unless you’d like some pickle related humor somewhere along the lines of how they resemble The Hulk’s penis.

  • Teresa’s hot and def female! McBagel is just wistful that his male lover left him, name not to be disclosed but he went to prison yesterday, and is taking it out on the world, since his lifestyle has been shattered.

  • Cheese, really? That’s the best you can come up with?

I swear, they should require licenses for being on the internet the way you need a license to drive a car.

  • No Pickles, you could just avoid reading comments by Rudy/Fred/UpChuck (oops, DocChuck). Then you won’t have to worry about being offended :)

  • @adamprato: Says the guy who just made a terrible puke joke. You sir just lost the internets.

  • opinions about everything, knowledge about nothing.

  • Rudy, I’m not saying *I’m* offended. I’m just helping her to enjoy ML without being so (easily) offended :)

  • @NoPickles – Agreed. No more making fun of the way Midtown Lunchers look. It’s just stupid, and not funny.

Too many complaints. The comment has been deleted.

  • Wow— I participated in the only Zach closed thread so far on Midtown Lunch (Where are you dude from rockplaza? Was it Chris?) and feel we are inching towards a number 2. Plus, I am with Goats, Teresa has a Hot Profile Pic… Did you ever look at some of the others? (Me, wearing a tie and holding cookies is up there…)

  • I choose to skip over most all retarded comments and have a pretty thick skin, but some comments are just in bad taste and I dont think any website would want to be linked to that.

@CheeeeEEEse: looking forward to additional humor from a new source. Try harder next time though

@adamprato: thanks for the internet lessons. Where can I find the “any” key?

  • Aww, she dislikes everything that I like. =(

  • …and I was wondering why there were so few comments posted for the ML of the week…
