Sophie’s Cuban Gets Reviewed by the NY Times

The Fried Pork Sandwich from Tina's Restaurant, Midtown NYC
Fried Pork and Plantain Sandwich

Yesterday it was Gourmet Magazine editor Ruth Reichl shining a light on Midtown Lunch’ing, this morning it’s the New York Times.  Sophie’s Cuban, one of the more popular lunch’ing options we have (and not just because of their free lunch grand openings), is reviewed in the $25 and under column in the New York Times today.  Considering that the newest location (40th btw. 7+8th) is across the street from their building, it’s not all that surprising.  Pete wells pays special attention to the pork and plantain sandwich, calling it “authentic sandwich bliss.”  He also mentioned the all too familiar sensation of having your “mind go blank” shortly after eating it.  My brain is going numb just thinking about it. • holy shit, that looks good enough to have heartburn for the rest of the day for…

  • Amen to that Shauna, add 3 tubs of green sauce to it and you will be tasting it over & over until next Tuesday. But damn it’s tasty

  • I got that sandwich from Tina’s a few weeks ago, it was so good I ate all of it, and then was so sleepy I thought I’d pass out! I think I also remember being intensely thirsty afterwards. Mildly embarassing my first week at a new job, but completely worth it.

  • I’m eating one of these as I type this. It’s without a doubt one of the best sandwiches I’ve ever had. Ever. I have reached new levels of lunchtime bliss….

  • i’ve had this sandwich and both locations and they are both divine. that being said, if you can make it to tina’s (the other location) i find the sandwiches there to be more flavorful.

  • I just tried Sophie’s on 40th between 7th and 8th for the first time today. Instead of the fried pork, I got the above-pictured sandwich with pulled pork, and it was delicious! Thanks for the tip, Zach!

  • Sophie’s is excellent. I used to frequent the one on Chambers back in my downtown lunch days. (Well, I’d go from time to time, on days when I resisted the siren call of Pakistan Tea House.)

Sandwiches are great. Sweet plaintains. Ahhhhh! Everything is great.

  • This place is terrible. This is not authentic Cuban food and I can name a ton of other places that make a better Cubano. This is designed for people who are not Hispanic

  • Eric can you give some suggestions?
