Ask Midtown Lunch: Best Milkshake in Midtown?

Sent to the old Inbox this morning…

Where can I get a great milkshake in midtown? I’ve tried every Mr Softee and imitation truck around and find they’re all not thick enough and doused with vanilla syrup. Goodburger makes a decent shake, but I’m looking for something great, it is nearly summer after all. -Matt

Well Matt, you may be disappointed to hear this, but I’ve never had a milkshake in Midtown.  I think my reasoning is this… if I drank milkshakes at lunchtime, I would weigh 10,000 pounds.  It’s just science.  “No Milkshake Rule” = Zach is still alive.  So for this one, I’ll have to turn it over to readers.  Got a rec for Matt?  Post it in the comments below…

  • Pop burger has a fantastic Black & White shake.

  • Shake shack has decent shakes and decent burgers, but the place in general is SUPER-OVER-RATED. Anyone who is crazy enough to wait hours for their average faire is insane…I live a block away from that place, and the only time I go is late at night during the week, when there is no wait. I had the Shackago Dog last week–meh. Average. I also had a Shackburger, which is good, but not nearly as good as a Houston’s burger (which is 3 blocks away) or even Outback.

  • I’m working on a ‘wichcraft vanilla shake right now (from the Ice Cream kiosk on the corner of 42nd and 6th). I’m a bit ashamed that I never tried it before, considering it is literally 20 steps outside of my building. It’s great, just thick enough, the right hint of vanilla without being overbearing. $5, 16 oz, well worth it.

  • Out of Bounds…..but once had a milkshake in Devon made with unpasturized whole milk and mixed with clotted cream(wikipedia it) that then had a small tub of melted nutella from the microwave mixed in with crushed ice…….. and the finishing touch? ……3 fingers of Stolichnaya.

  • Another vote for Zipburger!

They have perhaps the best chocolate shake I’ve had in NY. The difference is they put chocolate chunks in there so it’s not all just milkshake-y

  • Junior’s has a pretty mean black & white milkshake in the grand central dining concourse….

  • Zip Burger – hands down. Their chocolate shake is fantastic. They don’t use syrup – but rather a more real form of chocolate.

  • Shake Shack has decreased the size of their milk shakes 25%. Also, they now pour two shakes out of one blender cup. Do milkshake connoisseurs like to drink the milk shake for the top half of the blender cup or from the bottom half of the blender cup? This change in process has decreased the consistency of the quality of the Shake Shack milk shakes.
