Will We Ever Find Another Yum Thai?

While Yum Thai (44th btw. 6+7th) was certainly not the best Thai food in Midtown, it had one thing going for it- it was a true Midtown Lunch. Counter for ordering, tables and chairs for sitting, or you could take it to go. No waiters, no tipping, quick, cheap and easy. Now that it’s been shuttered for almost 6 months, and nobody is stepping in to fill the void, lunch’ers have been forced to turn to sit down Thai restaurants for their fix.
This week, NYC Food Guy (aka Lawrence, aka “Superman”) has a Drunken Noodles showdown, with the Out of Bounds: Pam Real Thai Encore (47th btw. 9+10th) losing to Topaz on 56th btw. 6+7th, while Brownie from Blondie & Brownie re-discovers her love of Pongsri Thai (48th btw. B’way+8th), the sit down Theater District favorite, right next to Aoki, and Saigon 48.

I can’t get enough of Pam Real Thai Encore. It’s hands down my favorite Pad See Ew (and Thai place in general) in Midtown. It’s the offshoot of Pam Real Thai, which is 2 blocks up, but has a much better atmosphere. Never crowded at lunch, so it’s guaranteed to be quick sit-down service. And even with tip and tax, most dishes come in under $10.

pongsri thai set’s the standard for tom yum soup…..they’re on 48th and 9th….i was there today and had a bowl of tom yum and a pad thai for $12.50

Mmmmm. I’m going to have to check out Topaz. And the Pad Si Ew from Pam Real Thai. I’m envisioning a Pad Si Ew throw down in my near future…

Since the death of Yum Thai, I discovered Pongsri which in my opinion is pretty good. Never been to Topaz or Pam Real Thai, gotta check those out.
But alas, my love of Thai is sending me to Thailand in May where I shall indulge everyday for 12 days.

I’ll have to agree Yum Thai was a midtown go to spot for Thai. I have a very special place in my heart for Yum Thai because it was my very first Thai experience. I was sad to see it close down. Thai food is now a must have for me at least twice a week.
Since then I’ve tried countless Thai places. Sure Pongsri is good but if you just want to order in give Siam Inn NY a try. They have the best everything! I assure you the pad see ew is one of the best you’ve ever had. There is something about the way they prepare their chicken so give anything w/ chicken a try: the red curry, pad thai etc. Oh one last thing, the thai iced tea is great. They give it to you in a plastic container. The funny part is they measure it so the thai iced tea fits exactly to the top of cup with ice they give you.
I’ve never actually dined there but for those of you who would like to it’s on 51st and 8th.
Topaz is where it’s at. The Pad Thai isn’t great but the Drunken Noodles make up for that. I also can’t speak for the Pad See Ew which everyone seems to like so much, but I can’t imagine it being anything but delicious. As a result of their bogus, phone off the hook lunchtime policy, it is essentially a walk-in, take out spot. It’s crowded and small so you won’t have the chance to mill around inside, but now that it’s nice out, that shouldn’t be a problem.
