Dizengoff Knows the Meat on Hummus Trick

Solomonov is back with another food gimmick that works too well to make you mad at it. Across from his chicken and donuts shop is the newest mini-restaurant, Dizengoff, a hummusiya. Like a savory, chick pea based ice cream shop, you get to pick your topping.  Although I am a life long member of Team Baba Ganoush, I knew this particular hummus would be a nosh worth spending my gelt on.  Dizengoff, named after a super hip shopping area in Tel Aviv, bring some hipness to Sansom Street with its open entrance, colorful tiled and mirrored walls, and baseball card ordering system. A few tables are located in front of the counter, though its more of a take out spot.

The limonana, frozen lime and mint drink,  is intense- the lemon really punches you in the face. The kind of punch you enjoy though.

In Israel, I learned the real secret to great hummus: put ground meat in it. It seems Solomonov is aware of this secret. The lamb, pistachio, and mint combination ($11) made for the most sophisticated hummus I’ve ever encountered. The smooth hummus and savory lamb medley is miles away from that sad stuff you forget about in your fridge.

The side salatim was so Israel I could feel a Mediterranean breeze on me. The simple tomato and onion salad, pickled onion, and snappy mini pickle are exactly what my distant family in Israel would have with every dinner.

Make sure to count your pita! I realized the staff had forgetten to include mine, luckily I hadn’t gotten far before I realized this and was able to receive my pita and apologies. You don’t want to miss out; baked fresh every day, these fluffy pitas are the best you will find in the city.

Note Dizengoff opens at  10:30am and aims to close at 8, but have been closing in the early afternoon as  the pita has been running out.

So what’s your hummus flavor- lamby, tomatoey, or plain?
