Stuffed with Burgers and Mushroom Patties at Good Stuff Eatery

Spike Mendelsohn’s DC burger chain opened in Philly last week. I don’t know many places whose decor sense can be described as “cocky,” but this is definitely one of them. Besides the narcissistic tshirts and wall art, the next thing I noticed was the confusion around the register. We were not sure where to go to order our food at first. I can say that our food was ready quickly, signaled by out vibrating buzzer a la Shake Shack. It is hard not to compare everything Good Stuff does to Shake Shack since they are very similar in what they offer and how they offer it.

Before you take your grub and head upstairs to sit or head back to the office, make sure to hit up the sauce bar. The mango and chipotle mayo are excellent. The fries were a little limp, I preferred the onion petals, even though they were pretty heavy on the doughy breading.

The shake list is all tempting. I picked the salted caramel, but almost went with the red velvet. They come super thick, a mini is all I could handle.

Burgers start at $6.50. I tried the Steakhouse Burger ($7.25) with roasted Cremini Mushrooms, onion straws, swiss Cheese and mayo.  Burgers come on a soft, very fast food-ish style bun, the kind that squishes immediately after the first bite- not a bad thing, just something to know. Our patty was pink in the middle and well salted, which I was happy to see and happy to taste. It is on the thicker side compared to other fast food-ish burger places, but not very wide.

Chicken breast or turkey burgers instead of beef burgers and lettuce wraps instead of buns are available. There is only one veggie option, but it sounded too good to skip; panko breaded and fried portobello stuffed with muenster & cheddar, with tomato, annoyingly oversized red onions, lettuce & pickles and Good Stuff Sauce. It is less cheesy and crispy compared to Shake Shack’s porto burger, but I still enjoyed it a lot, the savory mushroom flavor was intense.
Burger +small fry+ mini shake = just under $15, which is a little more than I like to spend for lunch.  I had no leftovers besides a bit of shake I just couldn’t stuff down.

THE + (What somebody who likes this place would say)

  • Shakes, fries, burgers, turkey burgers, chicken, shroom patties, salads- all the American basics, ready for me quickly
  • Burger is not overcooked or undersalted

THE – (What somebody who doesn’t like this place would say)

  • I don’t like finishing a $7 burger in only a few minutes
