Sushi Tsujita’s Limited Lunchtime Special is the Best in L.A. Right Now (And They’ve Got One of Those Crazy Japanese Toilets!)

If you are as much of a cheap bastard as me, you’d be forgiven for ignoring the opening of Sushi Tsujita on Sawtelle a few months back.  Early word was that the ramen and tsukemen specialists had opened a high end, omakase only sushi spot specializing in “classic emomae sushi” (whatever that means. I’m still not exactly sure.)  But the important info that you may have missed is that there’s a lunch special! And the even more important info, is that it’s pretty much the best sushi lunch special in Los Angeles right now.

The menu at Sushi Tsujita has something for everyone, from an $80 omakase to a $25 chirashi bowl.  In between there are two nigiri lunch specials (one for $38 and one for $50) plus a $35 “special” chirashi bowl.  In other words, you could spend a shit load of money at this place.  But the best deal is their limited quantity $15 chirashi bowl.  The catch is there are only 15, and once they run out that’s it for that.

On the left is the lunch special, $15 chirashi, on the right is the regular $25 chirashi.  You get a few less pieces on the left, and no uni, eel, or chawan mushi (which, admittedly, is filled with seafood and pretty excellent) but overall it’s pretty spectacular for the price.   And the best part is, they change it up from day to day.

On another visit, voila!  There was a tiny bit of uni.  Plus a different kind of tamago, and some lightly seared tuna.  You also get a pretty delicious (and fairly chunky) miso soup to help fill you up a little bit more.  It’s still what I’d call a “sensible” lunch, to be sure. And you don’t get nearly as much fish as, say, Sushi Gen’s $15 lunch specials.  But for the quality and uniqueness of the offerings, it’s pretty much the most exciting sushi lunch special in L.A. right now.  And for some inexplicable reason the masses haven’t caught on yet, so the $15 chirashi was available all during lunch, both times I went.  I can’t imagine that will be the case for much longer.

Oh, and if the food alone isn’t enough to entice you to Tsujita Sushi, the bathroom has one of those crazy Japanese toilets!  Provided that’s your thing.  I tried it out, and discovered it is most definitely not mine.  The kick-ass $15 chirashi bowl will have to be enough for me.

  • The salmon and ikura bowl is also an incredible deal at $18. I had it this weekend and it was delicious. The salmon roe is marinated in a sweet sake, soy sauce etc and has a beautiful flavor and pop. I think the nigiri lunch was $34 when I was there too but I think had fewer pieces.
