PROFILE: L.A. Lunch’er “Mike”

As is customary on Midtown Lunch, every Tuesday we profile a random reader to get their recommendations for the best spots to lunch near their work. This week its Mike, a Culver City TV writer and the blogger behind Unemployed Eater (which he obviously started before getting a job.)

Name: Mike

Age: 26

Occupation: TV Writer

Where in L.A. do you Work?: Culver City

Favorite Kind of Food: Above average chicken sandwiches, pizza and fancy burgers.

Least Favorite Kind of Food: Chipotle. Subway.

Favorite Place(s) to Eat Lunch: Victor Jr’s (10113 Washington Blvd) for chicken cheesesteak and caesar salad “with croutons” — real men, even in LA, eat croutons. Hole in the Wall (11058 Santa Monica Boulevard) for the most delicious turkey burger in these here parts. K-Zo (9240 Culver Blvd.) because like a good auto mechanic, every one deserves a reliable sushi spot. The Nook’s (11628 Santa Monica Blvd) salmon wrap is downright tasty), Mezza (9901 Washington Blvd) for Mediterrawesome kabobs and the such. Cafe Surfas (8777 W Washington Blvd) for Jorge’s Chicken Sandwich – never met Jorge, but the man’s a clear genius. And Tender Greens (9523 Culver Blvd) for “The Moody” – a caesar salad with steak AND grilled veggies. Really loved the burger at Beacon as well – may it rest in peace.

“Go-To” Lunch Place You and Your Coworkers Eat at Too Often? We do Westside Tavern (10850 W Pico Blvd) almost every Friday. The place is amazing. Even their cauliflower soup rocks. Soup. With cauliflower. Back in the day, Skratch was a big hit at the office… before it jumped the culinary shark and became Choppe Choppe and then changed its bread.

Places you have discovered thanks to Midtown Lunch? I feel like there’s been way, way too little Culver love.

The farthest place you’ll drive for lunch on a normal day? Both unfortunately and fortunately, I do not walk or drive for lunch. It’s all brought in. Most of the ordering is pretty CC local. Occasionally we’ll go beyond though, like All About the Bread and Soda Pops.

If you could work anywhere (just because of the lunch) where would it be and why? New York City. I’m a sucker for good sandwich, salad and pizza spots and I feel like NYC houses more of the such than anywhere else in the world. I also enjoy washing down my lunch with a nice Black and White, which NYC also specializes in.

Is there anything you’d like to ask the Midtown Lunch readers in L.A.? Are there any hidden gem sandwich joints in the Culver area? P.S. For Culver City post-lunch coffee, I love The Conservatory. And for the sweets, definitely Essential Chocolate Desserts.

Got an answer for Mike? Put it in the comments. And as always if you want to be next week’s Profiled: L.A. Lunch’er (or know somebody you’d want to nominate), email me- zach@midtownlunch.com.

  • Ironically enough… had an amazing milanesa sandwich from the Cemitas truck in front of Smart & Final on Venice yesterday. Only $5 and it was awesome. Highly recommend it…

Have you tried LUNCH for sandwiches? Despite having a coupon for there, I can never make it there before it closes at 4 pm but am curious if it’s any good.

Thanks for the Hole in the Wall recommendation. I’m always looking for a good Turkey Burger.

Thanks, Zach. I’ll have to check that out.

TreasureLA- We did Lunch once last year. Didn’t leave an impression – which, in my opinion, it should if you have the cajones to name your joint ‘Lunch.’

Hole in the Wall is great. Make sure to get the pretzel bun.
