What's good around 55th & Madison?

Help! Just changed jobs and don't know what's around here. To make it worse, the MTL map doesn't work on my new computer. What's good around here? Recs for food trucks, sandwiches, Asian food, etc. would be much appreciated!

  1. The Halo Berlin cart is usually on 54th and 5th, and Tuscany is on 55th near 6th (excellent chicken parm or meatball parm, pretty good pizza)

You've got Five Guys on 55th btwn 5th & 6th. Certe also on same street and Pizza by Certe further east on 56th btwn Park & Lex. The Halal carts on 6th and 53rd not too far. My old stand-by for a decent cheesesteak/fries is Reliable Food deli on 54th btwn Park and Madison. Enjoy and welcome to the neighborhood.

  3. There's definitely a lack of good food around that area. The Korilla truck parks on 55th and 5th sometimes and I've seen Mexicue once on 56th and 6th. No good Asian options nearby.

  4. Thanks for all the recommendations! I'll definitely have to explore.

Fresco to Go (or whatever the Fresco take out place is called) is really good. Yes, too expensive, but the food is great, and you can easily eat for under $10.

  8. I haven't been in over a year, but...

New York Thai Grill and Sushi, 37 W 54th St (btw 5+6th Ave)

I used to frequent the owner's other location and have only eaten at this location a few times.

The only things that I found they did well (different cooks, same recipes, so results may vary):

    - Panang and Green Curry

    - Spicy Basil Fried Rice w/chicken — extra spicy

    - Gai Pad Prik Bai Krapao

    - Po Pia Tod (appetizer) are rather small and thin but crunchy and decent

They have a lunch menu, but I’ve only eaten the full priced meals – so I cannot comment on lunch portion size or if they offer the same items I mentioned, but the dinner portions had plenty of protein.

Their Pad Thai had a funky color and is just bad, so stay away.

Seconding rec for Glaze Teriyaki, 54th & Lex.

  10. Great suggestions - thanks! Does anyone know if there is any good Chinese or Mexican food within a 2 avenue or 3 block radius?

  11. Ive kinda new to the area as well. But, @idontknow:
"There's definitely a lack of good food around that area" this is not true it does takes some exploring.

    Too add to the list:
Best PHO ive prob had in the city: OBAO. I cant seem to order anything else because im hooked on the PHO.
Chinese: Kar Won, get your Roast meat over rice fix (Crispy Pork Belly and Duck)
    Excellent ramen: Hide-chan
    Sandwiches: CerTe
Best street meat: Tony "the Dragon" Dragonas Cart

As for Mexican: I give up theres no good Mexican food in NYC (spoiled Texan)
But, Tinnas Cuban hits the spot for me. If anyone can tell me were to get real lard refried beans and cheese enchiladas with red sauce let me know!

There's been a surge of decent-to-very-good Mexican in the city, but none of it too close to you. El Rey de Sabor parks a cart at 60th and 3rd, however, and the tacos there are quite tasty (plus, they have lengua).

  13. OBAO (especially when it first opened) and Hide-chan are fantastic, but they're too far a schlep for a winter's day, or a quick lunch. I also used to go to El Rey del Sabor a lot (on 49th) but again, too far to go on a cold/busy day.

ceh - I forgot there was another Menchanko Tei on 55th! I used to like going to the one on 45th, despite how crowded it was during the lunch hour.
