What did you have for lunch today?

mkim1206

I had tofu undon from Yagura. It's good if you are not overly hungry.

  1. Desk. Fruit and carrots from nice foreign street vendor. Cost 3 bucks, and I can eat carrots till about Wednesday.

  2. Wellerfan

Subway BMT foot long with everything on it and Baked Lays chips.

  3. Yvo

    You ate desk?

bento I need to supplement because it spilled all over the inside of my bag. Dammit.

  4. Yes Yvo. I used the leftover splinters to pick my teeth. The metal bits didn't go down so well.

  5. mkim1206

puhahaha, you guys made me spit out my coffee.

  6. Steve
  7. deanlo

packed. double decker tuna (in oil) on dark wheat, banana peppers, scallions, black pepper. no mayo :(.

  8. adamprato

Isn't this a dupe of the "hey what are you eating?!" post?

I think I'll reply there instead!

  9. mkim1206

Adamprato, that's not true. I asked what did you eat today for lunch...not what you ate randomly at any point. hehe..but if you insist.

  10. ESNY

Chicken pita, extra hot sauce from Kwik Meal on 47th and Park.

  11. stevenp

Chicago deep-dish pizza with lots of tasty chunks of juicy sausage and mucho cheese. In Chicago, where it's done right.

  12. DIY Quessadila from the deli

    steak/onions/peppers/cheese/rice/beans/guac/chipotle sauce.

    goodnight.

  13. Yvo

You mean in Chicago, where pizza is done wrong?

    Hahahahahahahaha

  14. Sausage Parmigiana Calzone from Little Italy Pizza ($5.45) it was delicious! Way mmore filling than their overpriced slices.

  15. StreetMeasOnsumer3008

Chicago pizza where UNO's is a top contender? Don't even bother with Geno's. Their sausage pie is horrible! I like deep-dish pizza when it's done right. Not when it's all mushy dough, overflowing sauce with little cheese and hardly any meat on it. Bootlegged and expensive!

As oppose to NYC, plenty of local joints will do justice to a pie!

  16. stevenp

Yvo - wrong. Sorry to have to point this out to you, but a well-made deep-dish pizza is heaven. And it is way better than the typical sitting-on-the-counter-and-reheated-so-it's-kinda-dried-out typical NY slice pusher's product.

  17. hungry

How can you consider it pizza when the definition of pizza includes a shallow bread-like crust? Don't get me wrong, I like deep dish too. But it's completely different and I don't think it as pizza.

  18. Yvo

Learn to take a joke... I could really care less about the whole deep dish vs. thin crust argument. I have my preferences and other people have theirs... I'm not one to jump down anyone's throat to tell them their way is wrong, it isn't wrong, it just isn't my way or what I prefer.

  19. A deep dish pizza is a meat and cheese cake.

  20. stevenp

Yvo--yes, you should definitely relax and not take thing so seriously!

CheeeeEEEse: Yes! And a yummy one at that. With big juicy chunks of sausage and tasty tomato sauce that is actually wet--can't think of the last NY slice I had that had those qualities. Good crust in NY, but the pizzas tend to be dry, dry, dry.

  21. mkim1206

I had salmon bento box from Chiyoda. I love their side dishes.

  22. rinda

    Yvo, love your bento blog!

  23. Yvo

    Thanks rinda :)

I had chili with all the accoutrements except sour cream. Will fix that and buy some later today!

  24. Falafel laffa from Baraca (formerly Olympic Pita) and a choc. chip cookie and brownie from Treats Truck. Nice that they are so close together when I am feeling extra hungry.

  25. Sarah

living up to my hippie ass reputation: Quinoa with green beans and roasted potatoes and some sauteed chard on the side.

  26. banh mi from the new deli place on 57th... not horrible, not good....

  27. mkim1206

Sarah, where do you even get that kind of stuff???

  28. adamprato

mkim, theres this great thing called "The Internet" and this awesome site called "google" which lets you find things on "The Internet".

    http://www.bobsredmill.com/gluten-free-grains-beans-and-seeds/

We use their flax meal, almond flour, and other grains.

  29. Goats

No joke, I have a farmer friend in Humboldt County California who bought over 500lbs of quinoa when the market crashed last summer---b/c he thought there'd be a food shortage. I think someone was enjoying a little too much of their own "produce" when they made that einsteinesque decision, but who am I to judge...?

  30. mkim1206

$41 for a 7 lb bag? no thanks. I rather eat my $7 pork belly lunch special and die young. O_O

on a serious note, my mother in law made that for me once. she made stuff pepper with it and it was pretty good.

  31. mkim1206

Goats, man, that farmer friend of yours must have spent his life savings to buy 500 lbs of quinoa.

  32. Goats

As I said he is a "farmer friend" in Humboldt county-10 grand or so is nothing to him.....LOL

I on the other hand prefer to throw that type of loot in the stock market--but again, who am I to judge???

I just want to know how long that stuff lasts before it rots.....

  33. Yvo

mkim - quinoa can be bought in the bulk bins at the Whole Foods in Tribeca. I've been buying 1/4 lb at a time... think it comes out to less than $1... because I hadn't decided if I liked it or not yet. This past time using it worked out very well so I'll continue.

The bulk bins at *THAT WHOLE FOODS* also has dried beans, various nuts, other grain type stuff... I'm not sure if UWS WFs has bulk bins, but I'm 99% sure Tribeca is the ONLY one in NYC to have them, so don't look at the others for this.

You can also buy quinoa packaged at some stores though I never looked for it so couldn't give you an idea of brands or where to look.

If you meant green beans, potatoes and chard, though, there might be other problems to discuss first... lol :P

PS I highly recommend joining a CSA! My pickup tonight will include all of those ingredients except quinoa. Well, kale, not chard, but I group them together because I inevitably cook them the same way. :)

  34. Sarah

If the question was where did my lunch come from, I made it at home. And quinoa is becoming pretty common in grocery stores. You don't even have to get it at the hippie/yuppie ones. I got this package close to my house in crown heights. Its not expensive either, and its a complete protein!

  35. Sarah

Oh and Yvo, a few weeks ago I made quinoa in kind of a pilaf style with a bunch of curry powder and MAN was it tasty! Just a preparation suggestion....

  36. Goats

Thus, quinoa is perfect for the end of the civilized world I suppose....

I tried it once, the same day I drank/tried that nasty kabucha stuff and was not a fan of the quinoa.

  37. Yvo

Ahhh that sounds good. The first time I just made it plain and topped it with some stuff but meh wasn't crazy about it. This time I threw it into my 'magic soup' (see thread about being sick) and really liked the texture it gave the soup. So I'll be stocking some.

Quinoa is okay depending on preparation really... I've had it out that does NOT taste good.

  38. rinda

i'd love to join a CSA but dont most require pickups at the farm? i'd like to join next spring/summer but only if i dont have to travel too far for pickups.
