Ask for it spicy at Minar. They ramp it up considerably, as if to call your bluff.
-
Yeah, most places would make it spicy if you asked them to treat you as if you were a native :)
I haven't had much indian in the past few years in the area. I'd suggest:
- Bay leaf 56th btw 5th & 6th
- Baluchi (formerly Sitar) 56th btw 5th & 6th
- Jewel of Indian 44th btw 5th & 6th
- Utsav 46th btw 6th & 7th
- Dawat 58th btw 2nd & 3rd
- * Brick Lane 53rd btw 2nd & 3rdSupposedly Brick Lane has a curry that is so hot, they'll comp it if you can finish it (sauce and all). Not sure if the uptown one does it, but I read an article where the downtown one does it. I've been to the downtown one and I recall it being hot enough where I know I don't have to say "make it hot" when I go back.

Phaal is made just for wacky Americans. I have one friend who's tried. It's not a dish you eat if you want to actually taste the food. I think you even get a free beer if you finish, though that comes after your meal.
Brick Lane's regular stuff is good, at least in the East Village; I'll second this motion.

i think we need a reference point to compare it to. jewel of india has a pretty spicy vindaloo but i've had hotter. only downside is that it's pricy and those guys will suffocate you with upselling

Great. Thanks everyone.

Brick Lane's Phaal is rediculous- it actually made Travel Channel's Man Vs. Food:

I always hear that, but I witnessed someone eat the whole thing without breaking much of a sweat and tell us it was more vinegary than spicy. So I have a very biased opinion on the phaal. Not that I'd EVER eat it because I would die, but, yeah.
-
I've done (and won) the phaal challenge. I had to take a shower right afterward because I was drenched in sweat.

It was this kid who worked for Xanga but I can't remember his name... or I'd ask him to describe it

I can do really spicy food but it's just not worth it anymore...not so much the eating part, but it's the morning after trip to the porcelain throne that really discourages me.

have you tried 911 wings? you can actually feel the clump of wing meat move through your entire digestive system. down, left, right, left, right, down, and out. kept me up all night. literally thought i was going to die.
-
Man, I'd never make it. I had the Double Cooked Pork from Grand Sichuan (Thanks all for suggestions) and I barely made it through.

ahhahah apikoros is obsessed! :)

Does anyone have a suggestion for the best lamb or chicken vindaloo in Midtown? I love Minar, but just tried theirs and was disappointed. The sauce was a little too thin and it was not as over-the-top spicy as I'd hoped.
