i don't know..that dumpling truck still seems to be around so maybe people just like buying food from trucks...even if the food is bad.

Everyone has off days....
I am not usually so far up on the east side, but I was walking past and stopped at Tony Dragonas's cart at Madison and 62nd last week. Unlike you, I am a late eater and usually go out between 2-3pm.
I had probably the best chicken gyro that I ever had. The chicken was juicy, hot, and well seasoned - I watched the guy cook it. His sauces are really good as well.
Your comment had me thinking for a few minutes where I had gotten that memorable chicken meal from.

You can go try the Souvlaki Truck on 21st and 6th---I went last week. F'ing small as hell but tasty enough, if you don't mind shelling out 3.50 per tiny souvlaki pita... I'm not sure I'd make a trip to go back again (I work on 32nd and madison) but if you're in the area, or are craving quality souvlaki, I think they do a good job. I just don't like the pricing at all....

i dunno, i've gone numerous times in the past couple weeks (including today), and i've been satisfied every time. this is no gourmet stuff, but you dont expect that from a truck. i've tried their chicken/lamb over rice, and a couple of their specials. its pretty good for something from a truck and decently priced (except the specials).
i agree with joer, everyone has an off day. perhaps go back and order something different.

I REALLY wanted to like Uncle Gussy's. It's very close to my office, the truck is clean and the dude taking the orders was fast and friendly. My food SUCKED. I had a souvlaki deluxe. The meat was hard, dry and cold.
Thas was Friday at around 11:30 (I like to get a jump on the crowds). I watched the grillman make my order- he grabbed a handful of brown cubes from somewhere, threw them on the grill for about 15 seconds, and assembled the sandwich. This was NOT fresh food. It was absolutely INEDIBLE. I would swear I was eating refrigerated leftovers. I didn't like the fries either, but I generally hate any "coated" fries. The tzasiki was outstanding.
UG's is riding high right now- long lines and good press, but with food like this, it won't last long.
