I know the place on 46th btw 5th and 6th - it's not what I'm looking for. Anyone know some bomb Brazilian food in midtown?

Hey, I didn't say to AVOID the salad bar, just don't fill up on it! (Because it can be tempting.)

I used the word "avoid" and I stick to it. If you're paying $55 a head (thats for dinner, no drinks, no tax, no tip), you're going for *THE MEAT*, not some scrimps or "sushi" (though the pulpo makes a good side dish for *THE MEAT*).

Grazing the salad bar at CP is like going to Scores/Lace/VIP for the beer.

There's one there called Emporium Brasil, I think. I've gone there a couple of times and it's been very good. Then again, I've never been to Ipanema or any other Brazilian restaurant other than Churascaria Riodizio out in Roslyn. I think this calls for some experimentation.

@steveroller: Totally noticed that with pride, too. All my UT friends love going to this place. It ends up being their favorite spot in the city.

As for the salad bar. Don't avoid it, but don't get more than a small sampler no bigger than one plate. The salad bar isn't there to whet your appetite as so much as to break the monotony of meat after your third round. When all you can taste when you drink your caipirinha is salt and grease, you want to cleanse your palate with some seafood.

speaking of Brazilian, there was this side dish at a salad bar in Green Field that was made of like... something grainy. I kinda of want to say cornmeal but i'm not sure what it is. maybe it was just a tiny couscous salad but it was good and i'm really hoping it was some uniquely brazilian thing and not a plain old couscous salad.

It didn't have a label on it but I helped myself generously to it. I remember it had bits of veggies in it and it was loose. something about it reminded me of beans but i don't recall if beans were in it.

  6. deanlo - was it more like couscous or cornmeal? There is a brazilian side dish called farofa which is made from a type of corn flour sauteed in a little butter/oil with sometype of bacon or salted meat in it and a few big red beans, it is loose and dry. You eat it mixed in with the beans and rice.

that's it! mmmmm thanks! i remember when i was eating it i was thinking it would make a really nice stuffing and looks like they do indeed use it for that purpose.

i don't think the version i had had meat but i vaguely remember cashews and raisins

Farofa is yucca flour, not corn flour.

"variants are made with maize flour (farinha de milho), and flavors can vary"

the version i had definitely wasn't yucca. and i didn't eat it with rice
