URGENT - Anyone know any good Brazilian spots?

I know the place on 46th btw 5th and 6th - it's not what I'm looking for. Anyone know some bomb Brazilian food in midtown?

I'm not sure what "the bomb" is for you. Also, there are a number of Brasilian places on 46th (Via Brasil, Emporium Brasil, Brasil 46, Ipanema)...

    My picks are:

    - Ipanema (13 W.46th st) is my favorite restaurant on all of Brasil Row. This is great if you want good home-style brasilian food (entree based, not rodizio). I've been going there for about 11 years now (the owner/manager/staff know me well). I've seen dozens of waiters/bartenders change, but the food has been exactly the same from the first time I've eaten there. My favorite story about this place is: One time, Robert Deniro dined here and had their signature dish (Bife Portugesa). He loved it so much that he asked to meet the chef. The chef came out, and BD asked for the recipe, but the chef relented. Even after a number of increasing offers of cash for the recipe, the chef wouldn't give up the recipe, as it was what the restaurant is known for. They've had the same chef for the 30 years that the restaurant has been open, which I'm glad for since I hate when a restaurant I like changes owners/chefs or goes out of business. I've literally brought about 100 people there, and maybe 5 people didn't like the place.

    - Churrascaria Plataforma (49th btw 8th & 9th) is good for business or for a family thing, but I wouldn't go there for a date. It's not the entree-based, but more of a all-out food orgy. They are a rodizio, meaning they bring the roasted meats to you and serve you by the slice at your table (rodizio meaning 'rotation'). It's pricy, but if you're a hearty eater, you'll get your money's worth.

    - Sushi Samba is a fusion brasilian/sushi place that might be more into your "bomb" threshold than the more traditional places, though it's not in midtown.

I am going to second Churrascaria Plataforma. The prices are cheaper at lunch, but it is incredibly worth it for the vast amounts of succulent meat you can shove in your face. As a Texan, I fully endorse this place. For dinner they have live music.

ive been to platforma several times for bday dinners and its awesome...i would never go there fo rlunch cuz i would never be able to make it back to work after eating all that

  4. My gf is from Rio and the only place in NYC she endorses is Plataforma. The food is really great but expensive. Wherever you go, make sure you get the picanha. Sometimes it won't come around right away so you have to hold out or ask for it to come around. Plataforma has a cheaper mixed grill option instead of the whole rodizio experience, may only be at the bar though.
Overall, for the real deal go to Newark (sorry, I know you asked specifically for midtown).

CP is good, but if you ever leave NYC and go to any other reasonably-sized city, look for a local churrascaria. Ive been to several that serve up similar tasty meat orgies at a fraction of the price that P charges. And if you go, DON'T fill up on the salad bar!!!

Yeah, I forgot to mention to avoid the salad bar. The only thing I ever get from the salad bar are the hot casserole dishes which make excellent sides for the meatfest (I forget the names) which are at the very ends of the salad bar.

thunder: I'm sure each restaurant on brasil row has their own set of regulars with natives from brasil who think that restaurant is the best. I too have a number of brasilian friends who endorse Ipanema and only go there. Especially considering the bar area at Ipanema is always full of brasilians hanging out and chowing down on the comfort food they love, I'm sure Ipanema gets plenty of endorsements.

Avoid the salad bar???? No way! there is great seafood at the salad bar! Nice big juicy shrimp (cocktail), calamari, sushi, and usually octopus!
In the buffet playbook, the seafood is definitely a higher ticket item which must be enjoyed along with the meats! And those damn cheesy bread things are off the hook! As I've mentioned before, I've stolen them out of the restaurant, but I have yet to make my mad steal of all things meat! I know--I need to man up and do it!

My local Churrascaria growing up, a half chicken or ribs, a huge pile of rice and fries.. 5 bucks!!! Ahh the good ol' days.

i agree the salad bar is def a must...for both the sea food and the caserole type dishes. i went to a real deal rodizio in san jose costa rica and it was just as good as platforma...i would even go as far as saying that the platforma salad bar was bigger. oh damn all of you i want to go now!

Aww, I thought this topic was going to involve nudity. Rats.

@mghu777, as a Texan, ever notice how the Plataforma logo looks somewhat like a Longhorn and is suspiciously burnt orange? I always wondered if it was intentional.

Outside of Midtown Astoria is also great for Brazilian food. I really enjoy Favela, and Malagueta is also highly recommended. I'm a big fan of Casa in the WV too. Chick decor, manly food.

I'm sure the ML girls could show us some lovely Brazilians.
