Sakagura (211 E. 42nd between 2nd and 3rd) is having a special on Unagi Don (bbq eel over rice) for 10 bucks on Friday for Doyo Ushinohi: Unagi Eel Day. Learn more about the custom on their website (http://www.sakagura.com/menu_list.php?cid=26).

I love unagi don and can't wait for the sweet savory delight. I am just worried about the "*limited servings" part.

I've gone to Sakagura at least four times in the past three months starting at 12:30 to as late as 2:00 and everytime I've gone - they have run out of their lunch specials - so try to get there as early as you can.

If you like sushi-style eel, check out Funayama. Their AYCE sushi (M&Th, $23) includes eel (huge tasty pieces on rice) and awesome eel-avocado handrolls. the eel is probably 5-6" long and very tasty-some of the best I've had. Greenwich Ave bet. 6th/7th Aves, close to 11th St/6th.

Whoa! Just had this. I got to admit that I was a little weary looking at the pictures on their site. The bowl seemed tiny and there weren't that many side options. But as DragonChien pointed out, I got there early. They offered me a cold towel and green tea as soon as I sat down. On a hot steamy day like this, that towel hit the money. Then I got my order shortly after I told the waitress. *Raises eyebrows* My fears were soon waned and I was really shocked at the size of the portion. Usually when you order unagi don sushi restaurants give you small portions of generic eel that can be drowned in sauce. This looked perfect. Two huge fillets of tender eel over a bed of rice in a Ramen sized bowel. You can tell that the eel was grilled from the little bits of char, so it had that slight smoky flavor to it. It also came with a soup that reminded me of Chinese medicine. And there were two pickles to break up the flavor. The placed filled up pretty quickly, but so did I. I got to say that this was a great Unagi Don experience and I am definitely coming back to do this again. Maybe to try some of the myriads of sakes that they had on display.
