Toasted bagel with REAL butter?!

Where can I find this? It's hard enough to find a bagel good enough to eat without toasting. I used to get a toasted bagel with "butter" from Duke, Pranzo, wherever but they all taste kind of gross. Then I started grabbing butter packets and smearing them on the bagel when I got back to my desk.

Are there any places that use real butter anymore?? I'm on 50th between 6th and 7th.

Bistro on 51st btween 6th & 7th (next to Europa, across from Dukes) has very good bagels. The ones from Dukes, Europa/Pranzo etc all taste like they came from the freezers at ShopRite. Bistro is legit NYC bagels. They use real butter too.

    Who doesn't use real butter?

What I meant was, everywhere I go uses real butter. I don't think I've ever gotten a buttered bagel with a butter substitute. Is butter rare or expensive?

True. I have actually asked most places if they have margerine etc and they usually dont. But there can be a difference in quality.
I do feel Mokey's pain. The bagels at dukes are more like rolls with a hole. And even when smeared with butter it still doesn't taste "right".

But I stand by my recommendation. Bistro 51 is legit.

  5. pigiron: Where are you getting bagels from?

Username303: I went to Bistro 51 for the very first time last week and was not impressed. I'll give them another go.

Thalia's to go on 8th is the best so far. They use little butter packets on each bagel. I need to take the train 1 extra stop to make it there.

90% of the time I get my bagels from either Ess-A on 3rd and 50th or at Blue Flower. The rest of the time it's from any random generic Bistro/Pax/Smilers type place, and I've never (as far as I could tell) had anything besides real butter when I asked for butter. It's a standard thing. And it's generally pretty fresh due to high turnover. Is anyone else experiencing butter substitutes in New York?
