The REAL no man's land: 33rd and 9th. Ideas?

garshjb

In terms of despair, Midtown has nothing on the area WEST of Madison Square Garden. We have a deli called Best of the West. Let me tell you ... it is not. There are a couple of carts, but does anybody have any recs? This may be a lost cause.

Pretty bad area but at least you have Grand Sichuan and Company within a few blocks walk down 9th. And if you can't find any good food, at least you can drink at Billy Mark's West on 28th and 9th. Best bar in the city... a real drinkers bar.

I second Lezzette. Also, 2 doors down is Alpha sushi and asian fusion. Awesome! Call ahead. It gets mobbed at lunch time. And Royal Thai, 36th between 9th and 8th (south side).

Mooncake is great. It's going to be around $10, and is maybe more of a fast-nice-sitdown-lunch place more than a takeout place, but definitely check it out.

  6. Home on 8th
Fuji Express (Chinatown rice plate in midtown)
    Lunch Box
Burger joint (forgot the name) in the alley across from K-Mart on 34th and 7th.
Jerk Chicken next door to mystery burger joint above (owned by the same people)
There are several Thai places in the area; Aceluck, Royal Thai

  7. Awesome diner right off the corner of 34th and 9th. The name escapes me at the moment.

Skylight Diner. Better than Cheyenne (RIP). Is the Ming's still there on 9th between 33 and 34? They were cheap, and... well, they're clean.

Maybe I was just really drunk, but the diner between 30/31st & 9th wasn't THAT bad. I ate there a few times before they renovated at the end of 2008, and was pretty pleased.

  10. Anyone knows where to get good halal street food in that neighborhood? I guess I know about the one between 7th and 8th on 33rd, but are any of the other ones worth trying?

  11. Jamie

sorry but Ming's is absolutely disgusting. The use meat that is the quality of the cheapest dog food. The only passable items there would be hot and sour soup or things without meat ingredients.

  12. Good news coming to this area. Frame Gourmet Eatery will be opening very soon on the downtown side of West 33rd Street between Ninth and Tenth - great looking new space with sushi, noodles, salad bar, tossed salads, sandwiches, soups, etc.

Later this year there will be a new restaurant, take-out cafe, bakery and catering business opening in the 450 West 33rd St building, on Tenth Ave. between 33rd and 31st, opposite Hudson Yards. Simon Oren is behind it (owns French Roast, Nizza Pizza, Five Napkin Burger, L'Express, Nice Matin, etc.)

noticed some new things to be added and also wanted to second some things:

    1. home on 8th (chinese) is fantastic. fresh and healthy and tasty

    2. burger joint in the plaza next to kmart is bruce's burger -- very good.

    3. also brother jimmy's burger shack on 31st "behind" the bbq restaurant

    4. 34th (south) bet 8th and 9th is a new GIGANTIC korean (i am assuming) deli with fresh food and all kinds of stuff made to order (standard: sushi, sandwiches, burgers, tacos). but clean and well-lit.

also, noticed a new truck on 33rd between 7th and 8th, right in front of the kmart display windows: munch truck. has anyone heard of it or eaten from them?

and new indian place in the same strip of buildings as lezzette and alpha. anyone been?
