Thai in Midtown?

rinda

Where do MLers go for Thai? Ive tried Pongsri and Pam Real Thai. Both places left me a bit disappointed. I'm even willing to trek a little outside of the ML Zone if someone can recommend a great place. Thanks!

  1. i think ill find dinosaurs and unicorns before i find good thai in midtown east.

I like Pam better than others. The Yum chain, while cheap, always seems a bit bland. Breeze, on 46th + 9th, while not straight up thai, is quite tasty.

Their decor is horrific, but I'm kind of liking Pam Real Thai Encore on 47th and 9th these days (even a little better than the original Pam Real Thai.) Their crispy duck prik khing is out of control good (especially if you like spicy.)

Also good on 9th Ave is the original Wondee Siam (on 9th Ave. btw. 52+53rd) and the newly opened Room Service on 9th Ave. btw 47+48th. Once again, the decor is questionable (i.e. "Hell's Kitchen Chic") but everything I've ordered from there has been really really good.

I don't really eat Thai too often but in the city I would go to Bangkok House on W. 46th/ Restaurant Row. They're okay. There's also 3 Yum Yum restaurants next to it. Why do they need 3 so close to each other? Beats me.

@ TC - I wondered that too (I think there are four Yum Yum Bangkok's now), and somebody floated this interesting theory to me: the Thai restaurants on 9th Ave. all take whatever free spaces they can get because they know if they don't, a different Thai restaurant will open up in the space anyway. So they figure if the space is going to be Thai food anyway, they might as well own it.

That's kinda sad but hey, at least they own that whole area in Thai food. I only see Yum Yum, Yum Yum Too, and Yum Yum 3, but they kinda have a fourth. Bangkok House is their fourth restaurant. If you look around online, Bangkok House have ties to Yum Yum. Even their websites are similar. Haha.

Way out of bounds at 10th between 45th/46th, Olieng is my go-to place for Thai in the area. I don't know everything about Thai food, but I do know what tastes homemade and this is as close to the real stuff as I've had lately.

Their pad thai isn't Americanized (pro/con depending what you're looking for), and they have dishes I'm always looking for when I'm homesick (ladnar or bamee ruam pak).

Lastly, lunch specials average 7.95. Love this tiny place, wish it were closer.

And for those on the east side it looks like there's a new place called Thai 51, on 51st btw. 2+3rd

How is that Chili Thai place on 9th & 49th? - they get great reviews

  11. I'm out of bounds on the east side, but I recently got a craving for drunken noodles and went to the closest place that had them, which turned out to be Chada on 2nd at 35th. I can't speak for any of the other dishes, but the drunken noodles hit the spot. Not the best Thai food I've ever had, but good enough, and they have very reasonably priced lunch specials.

I always liked Aceluck on 9th Ave between 39th/40th.

@wayne - I have been a fan of Chili Thai for a while, but I stopped going after they raised their price and had lower their quality. When done right, their food is great! I'm also a fan of their Khao Soi. I once ordered Pad Kee Mao, and they didn't have the broad rice noodle so they used the thin one, and it clumped up and was flavorless. I once ordered a vegetable dish and ended up with bean sprouts, cabbage, and lots of onions and scallions. Maybe bits of carrots here and there. Just cheap stuff.

I *love* khao soi. I might have to try that...

Is it the real deal? And by that I mean, does it look like this:

@Zach - very similar. I enjoyed it and had it twice there. The only thing I wasn't fond of was the fact that they used sliced chicken breast. Taste kinda flavorless and dry to me. It has egg noodles and pickled cabbage in a curry broth, topped with fried noodles and onions. Very addicting flavors. Last time I had this was last year so I can't vouch for the quality now.

Zach, you and me both! Have you had the Khao Soi from Sripraphai? Oh man, and on the topic of Thai noodle soups, anyone have any luck finding Thai Boat Noodles? So homesick now..

i tried wondee siam on 9th ave yesterday. ordered the crispy pork with chinese brocolli off their not so secret "secret menu". like woah, is all i can say. this place definitely will become a regular in my lunch resto rotation. thanks ML!

  18. that's a great dish, the crispy catfish salad on that menu is unbelievable as well

  19. Posngri on 48th (Near 8th) is pretty tasty and their lunch specials are under $10

@Samwich! I finally registered at ML just so I could respond to you. Thanks to the M'Lunchers on some random post (freak of the week maybe?) I read about Little Thai Kitchen on 53rd Street, between 3rd and 2nd Aves. I think. Not bad, not bad at all. Esp. for that area.

  21. If you're willing to trek to Queens, definitely try Sripraphai
