Takeout friendly atrium/lobby near Trini Paki cart?

We'll be visiting from Chicago over Christmas. Plan for arrival day is drop luggage where we're staying in Brooklyn, back up to midtown for street food lunch, then check out holiday store windows.

We discovered Trini Paki thanks to the Urban Oyster food cart tour, want to go back, but temps being what they usually are at that time of year, we wonder if there's somewhere close we can get out of the cold and sit down with our yummy food, without making any security guard's day more annoying than it probably already is.

Any suggestions?

There is a atrium directly across the street in the Bank of America building with a few tables and chairs.

  2. Thanks, that would be really handy! One question, though: The plaza right in front of the BofA building was where we met to start our Urban Oyster tour, and it seemed as if they weren't too happy to have us standing outside. Are they more welcoming to people coming inside?

Grace Plaza is closed for construction so that is a no-go. There is an outdoor space between 45th and 46th and fifth and sixth avenues which will do in a pinch.

  4. Just checked with the Urban Oyster folks -- they say the lobby of the BofA building is public space, people sit there and eat all the time, no problem. Good to know for future reference.

  5. In general, anywhere you see the logo for a privately owned public space (a silhouette of a tree on a grid background), the space is open to the public. Developers usually agree to include such spaces in exchange for a variance for the city's zoning rules.

The Department of City Planning has a handy, if sometimes difficult to read, guide to midtown's privately owned public spaces online at http://www.nyc.gov/html/dcp/html/priv/mndist5.shtml.
