I agree. (And I'm salivating.) One of my favorite brunch places is Bone Lick Park, where you can get an AYCD brunch with many southern treats (from pulled pork to beef ribs to turkey sausage w/gravy to fried chicken), most with eggs, cheese grits, potatoes au gratin and/or collard greens on the side, for well under $20.

You forgot Chocolate Sop & drop biscuits for breakfast.
My grandmamamama used to make that for the grandkids. YUM.

When you find "real" southern food in NYC, let me know. I am from South Louisiana, and the best southern food in this city is at my house :)
Shrimp and grits, biscuits, red beans and rice, chicken and sausage jambalaya (my own pot), shrimp and okra gumbo, etc. I recently purchased a smoker and am now smoking pork shoulders, hams, briskets, fresh sausage, chicken and turkeys. I also have an deep kettle eletric fryer, good enough for a 12 pound fried turkey.
If anyone from the NY Fire Department came over to my apartment, I'm fairly sure I'd be going to jail.
Anyway, most of the recipes above you can find on my blog http://www.ForkNewYork.com - just scan down the blog.

If you feed them, maybe not. In fact if you feed me, I won't tell.

Well I was raised in Orlando, Florida some people say it's not really the "South" but I disagree. I really, really miss "Southern" Denny's Restaurants. Only Southern cooks cooked in the wee drunken hours of the mornings where hot, greasy breakfasts were served. What I would give for a breakfast like those here in The City!

Yup, sounds pretty biased. Southern food doesn't do it for me. Only spicy food does. Indian, middle eastern, and mexican does it for me. Maybe because I don't care about breakfast or dessert as much.
I'll give you this though. Southern Barbecue is the national standard. I don't think the anywhere else can beat barbecue. I haven't had enough worldly barbecue to say how it compares outside of the US, and by barbecue i mean, barbecue (smoke must penetrate the seasoned meat), not something like "rodizio".
That said, I'd put up Katz's Pastrami against any brisket originating from the south any day of the year.

To clarify my biases, let me first say that I am from Texas.
Now, onto my thesis. Southern food is the best in the world for two "meals": breakfast and dessert.
I'll start with the obvious first. Nobody puts as much emphasis or effort into their breakfast as they do in the American South. Unless you are a lame European who prefers a baguette and some butter for breakfast, I can't see anyone disagreeing here. From the simplest (for the south) breakfast of eggs, grits, toast and bacon to the overly indulgent options of French Toast or Steak and Eggs or Salt Cured Ham or Biscuits and Gravy, the South has the best breakfast. I mean, come on, steak and eggs is a dish down there.
On to dessert which i think is a lot less clear cut. While French and Italians have pastries and chocolate, I still think the American South wins out. Any fruit cobbler or pie, bread pudding, bananas foster, pecan pie, red velvet cake and everything else using lots of butter swing my vote to the south.
I'm writing this for two reasons. First is that i'm bored at work. Secondly, i want to encourage disagreement or alternatively see if most people agree with me.
Thoughts?
