Nah, not all Cart coverage going on here. Vendy's is coming up. Plus there are food trucks too.
-
If even Tumor says it, it must be true.
-
Whoa, there's a bon apetit cart? Chola indian restaurant is opening up a cart too? What about that turkish place on 2nd avenue, do they have a cart?
Oh, my mistake, you're just talking out your rear. Nevermind!

it's all the rage..like cupcakes were a 2 months ago...
-
Yo, that's probably the only way I would wait on a monster line for celebrity chef semi-pricey lunch food - on a cart! Otherwise, pass on the store-front.
-
No. The name should stay the same.
And it should have MORE cart coverage.

Cupcakes from a cart. Or a cupcake shop. LOL. what a joke. I have yet to find an awesome cupcake that I couldn't make for myself at 1/10 the price. (Or, for the same price, make a batch and have seconds and thirds, and still have plenty to share with others!) Hint: buttercream frosting is really easy to make too. I look at the people buying desserts from trucks and all I can think is "lemmings."
Back on-topic, midtown lunch for under $10 is all about carts and trucks, with a few other destinations here and there. Wake up, this is NYC.

stevenp, you just veered into what's-his-face territory with the "I can make it better" - also, check out Robicelli's in Bay Ridge. They make French cream (buttercream?) frosting that is out of this world to die for, and I don't like cupcakes. It's a great shop for lots of things, but the cupcakes are also phenomenal, hands down.

I'm torn between Yvo and stevenp here. Most of us cook, but a lot of those sweets are pretty easy to make (cookies, brownies, cupcakes, puddings, etc). It's not rocket science. I've tried to make croissants before, they resembled croissants, but certainly not something that you could sell for a few dollars from a trendy restaurant. So there are obvious degrees of difficulty in the desert world / pastry arts.
My wife and I (oh dear, I really do sound like he-who-shan't-be-named) were pretty renouned for our deserts (her apple pie was unbeatable, as was my pecan pie), and people always raved over her cookies/brownies/blondies.
So yeah, I'm closer to stevenp's opinion :)

Renowned... and why 'were' instead of 'are' just out of curiosity?
I think you misunderstand my point. I cook ALL the time, but I don't come on Midtown Lunch and talk about making my own halal, schnitzel, pork chop over rice and how it's SOOOOO much better and SOOOO much cheaper than the trucks/carts. I come here to read about the food that I can buy, not the food I can make. All of the cooking blogs I sub to - that's where I talk about making food.
That was my point.

Cooking and baking are different skill sets. Top Chef taught me that.
-
I think we do get your point. To exaggerate stevenp's point to maybe illustrate the sentiment, it would be akin to ordering a bowl of cereal from one of these places, when you could do that on your own just fine.
That said, to counter his point and closer to your point: There are plenty of "lemmings" who can't cook and do value the service of getting desert from one of these proprietors, not to mention those who don't want to lug around food the crowded trains as they commute to the office.
-
I personally can't cook so you can call me a lemming all you want, but its just not something I am good at. Going back to the cart arguement, think we also have to remember that there is a suggested block radius for this list, and most store fronts are fast food, already named, or over priced, so food carts are winning the battle. However, I can agree that I prefer to sit down then eat to the smells and sounds of a subway grate. :)
