Rosen's Deli (23 E. 51st St)

pshinnyc

Anyone have any idea what is going on with Rosen's Deli (23 E. 51st)? For years it has been my perfect midtown kosher style hot pastrami "fix". Appears to be closed for renovation, hopefully not changing into different restaurant all together?

Good riddance. Saw them gutting the place today. Overpriced with crappy service. You can do better for pastrami.

Suggestions? This place was convenient (only block away) and "kosher style" without being kosher - so I could get me sandwich with swiss cheese. Mendy's is ok and Eli's at the Citi Center Atrium is good - but both are strict kosher (no cheese!).

Where do you suggest as alternate?

  3. If you can stand the walk over to 7th avenue, go to stage deli or carnegie deli. It would even be worth it to take a cab. Those places are fantastic.

Or you can go to Katz's. Best pastrami in the known universe.

Stage could be worth the walk on a nice day, but Katz's definitely too far for "midtown lunch".

There's another deli between 5th and 6th that did a credible pastrami on toasted rye for me. Clearly not kosher, too. The name escapes me but it's close to the Banco Popular. Red backlit menu above the counter.

  7. The Stage on 7th between 53rd and 54th. Nothing is Kosher anymore but it will do handsomely. Great pastrami, lots of options for sitting... a bar and tables as well as a take-out counter. Good knishes too. Carnegie is overpriced, a bit grimy and more often than not packed with tourists. The other "delis" like Ben Ash are purely for visitors. Try the Stage. I think you'll like it.

Rosen's is becoming a "Toasties East" -- so, a chain deli? Maybe you'll get your pastrami back after all.

  9. Rosen's was never the same when they sold the place a few yrs back.

The Toasties on 48th btwn Mad & 5th has good corned beef and pastrami, but at lunch the place gets so crowded it borders on the claustrophobic. If they keep the old Rosens space, it should be a decent sized deli.

  10. Sarge's....Third Ave at about 35th....as good or better than Carnegie, not quite as overpriced.

  11. Isnt there already a toasties on 49th and 5th?

Katz's is doable as a "subway" midtown lunch - you can get there on the F train from midtown in 10-15 minutes. Plenty of time to get food and get back again.

I suppose there is also Junior's (in GCT and Times Square).

Finally got around to making the walk over to Stage. While I admit the pastrami was good, and exactly what I was looking for, I was SHOCKED by the $19.45 it cost for the sandwich ($14.95 + $3 extra for cheese + tax). Yikes. I had to forgo the side of fries which would have cost another $6 more.

    Wish I had been warned.....

So now still on the look out for a reasonably priced substitute for my Rosen's pastrami sandwich...

Isn't that how much pastrami sandwiches usually are? I seem to recall paying $that much at Katz's or something (and being totally disgusted, but paying anyway)

At Rosen's it was like $7.50 plus $0.75 for the cheese. While not the same quality as Katz's/Stage/etc. it was same kosher style steamed pastrami and did the trick.

I'd say $10 would be reasonable - but 20 bucks was bit much.

There's three things about Stage, though: 1) it's rather good pastrami, 2) there's a ton of it, way too much for one sandwich (and you can thank Carnegie Deli for forcing this issue), and 3) they get the Midtown Tourist markup.

A reasonable amount of pastrami -- say, what a Rosen's would do -- plus cheese might be more the $10 speed. Did you check out the deli on 51st next to Banco Popular?

  18. pshinnyc

@Dave Agreed, Stage was plentiful and good.

I'll head to the deli on 51st next week and let you know.

Resurrecting this thread. The Toasties East is now open as of yesterday. Very clean, of course, but it doesn't really look like much from the outside. There's a lot of space in the back to sit down and eat, but there's not a whole lot going on in front that looks like it's anything but generi-deli. Anyone willing to take one for the team?

I went down to Toasties today. The place definitely is clean and modern looking. I noticed on what they call the steam table, they had pastrami so I ventured a pastrami sandwich from the "steam table". A few complaints. 1) they sliced it with a knife, not a meat slicing machine - this resulted in overly thick (and fatty slices). 2) despite supposedly being a "steam table", there was no steam and the meat wasn't even warm. The only positive was the rye bread was very fresh thick slice - and tasty. Lots to choose from at Toasties, so I'll likely go back, just not for a pastrami sandwich from the steam table.

  21. Have you tried Ben's Delicatessen on 38th? I think it's between 7th and 8th aves, and the prices aren't too outrageous. Tons of seating too. They have really good chicken soup, and the corned beef is tasty. The portions are reasonable.

I work on 52nd/Park. Ben's is a bit out of my range. But I will keep in mind if in that area. Lately I've been getting my "fix" from Juniors at GCT, which is decent and not too expensive (albeit more than the ML $10 limit).
