Road to Street Meat Palooza 3 - Never Too Early

StreetMeasOnsumer3008

With SMP2 just ending recently, I already want to think ahead about next year's competition, Street Meet Palooza 3.

I still can't believe Kwik Meal won but the panel has spoken. My choice probably would've been between 53rd/6th, XPL or Steak Truck.

I'm not quite sure how Mr. Brooks chooses the judges, randomly or selectively, but I figure I should start campaigning for a seat sooner, rather than later IF Zach chooses the judges subjectively. Hopefully throughout the year, I can prove I'm worthy of judging 15 plates in 2010.

Most of the judges seem to be a blogger in their own right or associated with ML. As a non-blogger and a MLer among many MLers, it feels like I need to shine to snatch a seat. So what to do? Prove my love of street meats and do it consistently? Perhaps...

Nah, nothing Mini about me. I'd be more of a Dr. Evil. One... Hundred... BILLION STREET CART PLATTERS!

Restraining order? I guess you would be very familiar with those than anyone else, Mamacita?

  2. dougiec

I agree with the other regulars. You're scaring the crap out of me kid.

  3. StreetMeasOnsumer3008

HAHA. Oh well. The only thing I'm after is cheap food recommendations, great laughs, and a possible judging berth before the year 3000. Not like I'm here chasing after Mamacita, or harassing any of the other ladies of ML.

Another weekly of street meating and I conquered a plate of Shendy's today. Man, I feel bloated. I really wanted Steak Truck today or at least lamb/kofta at 53rd/6th or even tackle another greek salad at 100% H&H so I don't have to die at the gym later but decided to check out Shendy's after the white sauce topic earlier today.

These guys don't play around with their white sauce. That sauce is all over your plate and you don't even need to do any vigorous mixing to cover each bite. I had a chicken and lamb with yellow rice. They also have a white rice option. The chicken is plump, juicy, but no distinct seasoning as it was really powered by the white sauce. The lamb was alright. I could barely taste the seasoning. I think the tomato was the only thing I could really taste from the plate (separate from the white and hot sauce). Overall a good value for $5. The cover/sauce dude smiled at me weirdly and asked me if I'm from Korea though. WTH, I tell him I'm American/ born here. He then asked me if I'm chinese...

    The+:
Overflowing white sauce (Maybe too much of a good thing)
    Plump chicken chunks
    "Friendly" staff
    Good combo deal at $5

    The-:
    Mainly taste white-sauce and tomato
    Mild-mannered hot sauce
    Average rice and lamb
Halal Guys and Imposter are a block over

Not a real neg but I also started noticing how unfresh their lettuce is (It had brown ends where it was cut. Thanks Steak Truck - you ruined lettuce for me with your fresher leafy greens). Good thing their platter is $5 or there is no way they could compete with 53rd/6th famous and fake. I still prefer 53rd & 6th famous because they have better hot sauce, tasty lamb not drowned in white sauce, and kofta option!

I'm growing into the habit of washing down Street Meats with iced coffee from the ING Cafe on 49th. It really hits the spot. I also drink viet. iced coffee when eating pho.

StreetMeatTumor, your Delta Chi rush name is... Grandpa Simpson

  6. StreetMeasOnsumer3008

No thanks, I'm not pledging Delta Chi or any frat. From the picture, it looks like Lil Wayne enjoys hazing to the extreme!

I wouldn't be Grandpa anyway. I would look more like Homer after many eyars of Street Meats.

  7. ESNY

Actually, you'll probably more resemble Comic book store guy

  8. StreetMeasOnsumer3008

    WORST response ever?
    Nah, not Comic Book Guy.
Homer was making out with a whole hunk of lamb in one episode, Dial N for Nerder. Now that's street meat love.

Third time was the charm (Errr, fourth time ordering it. My 1st time they ran out of lamb). I went back to Steak Truck today to get my own "garbage" combo plate. It finally had everything it promised. Pita, falafel and fries so thank gooness they came though.

Today's combo was okay overall. I didn't get to hit up their twit special before 12noon for 4.99. Oh well. Salad is fresh as usual, craisins again. Chicken is flavorful. Yellow Rice was okay and according to their twit, they serving basmati rice at 12-1? Lamb was lil burnt and didn't really appreciate picking out the scattered pieces of char/ carcinogens. Falafel was very dry. Not greasy and oily like the other time.
I'm just happy I finally have a complete combo platter. No need to hunt down their combo anymore. I can move on with their chicken only whenever I'm in that mood.

ING Cafe Iced coffee again. My beverage of choice near my office it seems. I also wish the Eggs Travaganza stayed open through lunch. I had their chorizo, egg, cheese on a roll last week - very good brekfast choice. I'll try not to make it my third week a row but I guess I need something to fill that void left after my once-a-week Street Meats habit.

  10. Mamacita

The Lamb "scattered pieces of char/ carcinogens"
are what most people here call the tasty crispy bits. My favorite lamb or chicken has been on the grill top getting caramelized and crispy for a while. Zach has described this much better than I in the past.

  11. StreetMeasOnsumer3008

Well, I should've been more specific but I meant the black soot/ dark charcoal particles that has NO MEAT on it. The little char are not the same as the little meat bits, dude. That's pure carcinogen and it's smaller than the rice pellets. I'm just guessing it came from the lamb but it could've been scrapped right off the grill itself.

I wouldn't waste meat - burnt or otherwise - but I wouldn't openly inhale the extra uselss char too when it doesn't add flavor or any value to my meal.

Mamacita, do you just pretend it's extra black pepper/ spice when you eat your Street Meats with extra white sauce? :)

I thought I would tackle the Little Morocco cart today. After reading about their hot sauce and flavors, I wanted a plate too!
I'm glad I didn't stick to my once-a-week Street Meats. Well, it was still once this week for lunch. And once for dinner so I didn't break my rule too badly. Plus Steak Truck - been there/ done that - I really need a new platter to knaw on.

Today started off well with the breakfast sandwich at the Egg Travaganza truck. Lunch wasn't very promising - rummaged through my old Cheez-Its box. I had to grab a salad at Au Bon Pain so I could go work out at gym without starving. The mandarin chicken salad with sesame ginger dressing was alright. I leave my gym and decided to head toward Little Morocco to get there around 8:30pm. I order the combo with mixed rice. The guy even threw in fries on my plate too, covered it with white sauce and hot sauce. I immediately walked over to 40th Street and start wolfing down the plate, standing up.
I noticed how scrambled and delicous everything looked. Chucks of chicken/lamb, flavorful rice, black beans I didn't ask for but not heavy amount, didnt see any pintos, standard lettuce and tomato, and this is new: cilantro/coriander too? Hey, it works! I was surprised to see cilantro in my Street Meats. More flavor in their beast of a combo.

    The+:
    Decent amount of Meats
Mixed rice and hot sauce has flavor
There's beans and fries! Cilantro too!
    Excellent $5 dinner choice

    The-:
Average chicken/ lamb despite the spices
    Very salty feeling lingers
Rice is a little dry and XPL is still the leader
Hot sauce didn't melt my face off and barely knew white sauce was around

The harissa has flavor but definitely not the spiciest hot sauce around. I wolfed down the entire thing without a drink and felt fine. Good platter but little too salty for me (my fault for not having Iced Coffee on-hand and probably dehydrated from gym).
I will say this: Best Streets Meats I had this week. Steak Truck didn't even cut it. I hope Little Morocco upsets a lot of carts in SMP3. Their shoestring fries are better than the soggy waffle fries, rice is tastier, and hot sauce is better. Steak Truck will only win by fresher greens but no cilantro. I don't think I need to go back to Steak Truck anytime soon...maybe til SMP3 is around the corner. More flavors and it's only $5!!!!

    Steak Truck,

Thanks for commenting in Forums. Who knew I would draw this attention from you? You guys have fresh cilantro in your food? I didn't even notice. If you read my prior entry, I said I LIKED cilantro that Little Morocco put in their plate. If you put MORE sprigs of cilantro on where it's noticeable, then I would enjoy it TOO!!!

I just think Little Morocco has better spices.
I don't go to the nighttime 53rd & 6th very often. I usually go to the daytime 53rd & 6th. Their lamb is somewhat salty but their portions are bigger and more hefty. If anything, Little Morocco has a salty platter but they do not suck nor does my favorite 53rd &6th daytime.

Street Meats preference is all subjective and opinion-based. I didn't say I hate your food or anything. You still have the best greens around. Your chicken is flavorful too. I might be back for your chicken & rice but definitely no more combos.
