Road to Street Meat Palooza 3 - Never Too Early

StreetMeasOnsumer3008

With SMP2 just ending recently, I already want to think ahead about next year's competition, Street Meet Palooza 3.

I still can't believe Kwik Meal won but the panel has spoken. My choice probably would've been between 53rd/6th, XPL or Steak Truck.

I'm not quite sure how Mr. Brooks chooses the judges, randomly or selectively, but I figure I should start campaigning for a seat sooner, rather than later IF Zach chooses the judges subjectively. Hopefully throughout the year, I can prove I'm worthy of judging 15 plates in 2010.

Most of the judges seem to be a blogger in their own right or associated with ML. As a non-blogger and a MLer among many MLers, it feels like I need to shine to snatch a seat. So what to do? Prove my love of street meats and do it consistently? Perhaps...

... I'm thinking each week, I will eat at a Street Meats vendor and write about it to everyone. ML Street Meats correspondant?

Please feel free to throw out some vendors that have not gotten the attention it deserves and should be in SMP3.

I just ate at the Steak Truck this week. 2nd time for me. Finally claimed a chicken/ lamb combo...

  2. dougiec

I was a judge and I don't blog about food, or anything for that matter. I just commented on enough street meat and I've eaten Kwik Meal and Biryani cart for over 70% of my meals the past 6 months. Just stick with the site, update the posts and you could get lucky.

  3. Apikoros18

I give a "Ditto" to dougiec. I was invited but couldn't attend=== I would offer to be a "Freak of the Week" aka a Tuesday Lunche Profile. Get your name out there... as freaky a name as StreetMeasOnsumer3008 is.

  4. StreetMeasOnsumer3008

I usually eat halal at 53rd/6th and XPL, as many, many MLers. Once in a blue moon, I also go for Carnegie John's and the 100% H&H. I only recently hit up the Steak Truck thanks to SMP2.

Their chicken proves to be their meat of choice. The lamb wasn't anything special. Just irregular chucks of lamb/gyro. I did like the waffles fries in my platter. Surprisingly, their salad is worth taking notice too. Today, they gave me a craisins and almond slithers salad. I was suprised by how fresh and leafy it is (I notice they had quality greens last friday too but too busy enjoying the chicken and falafel). Much better than any generic iceberg lettuce and tomato being dished out. Chickpeas were present again but this time I didn't get any falafels? WTH! What the heck is going on here? Maybe they ran out of falafel or decided I didn't deserve any (I was there at 12:15 and it wasn't super busy). No pita either and I read people got pita in theirs? That's not good. Another near fail on the fully loaded plate?

    The +:
    Delicious Chicken
    Fresh salad
    Waffle fries!
Good hot sauce - it isn't weak or too watery

    The -:
    No falafels?
No pita if it's suppose to be there?
    XPL has better rice
The 53rd/6th lunch is only $5 for their combo and better hot sauce too

    Overall:
I would eat here again but I wish I got the fully loaded garbage platter that other MLeres are talking about. Definitely worth the $6 bucks but I'll probably just go for their $5 chicken with rice instead.

In the meantime, I could use more training before SMP3. Hopefully luck will be on my side in 2010.

  5. StreetMeasOnsumer3008

Thanks guys. I know Doug and Api got in too but your wife and child are more important anyway. So did Adam as a judge. I'm just saying majority of the panel is bloggin' or ML. I have to set myself apart I guess.

Hopefully I can prove myself worthy to be a judge by next year. I think this site is wonderful and I been hooked since reading it over a year ago about the street vendors and SMP1. I really want to be a judge someday. I don't care if it takes until SMP10.

  6. StreetMeasOnsumer3008

I apologize for my prolonged rant on steak truck earlier in the twitter entry this Friday. Man, I get crazy angry when I hear that I'm suppose to get this and that too on the platter and end up not getting either of them (especially when others are saying they did get it and on the same day I went). So did I miss out on --- 2 or 3 falafel balls and a slip of pita? Oh well. Less calories and less poop from me to pollute the world. Hopefully it doesn't happen again and I go nuts about it. Ugh. *exhales*

  7. Mamacita

Dude you're coming off pretty bad. You should apply for the freak of the week for sure. Make Fred happy.

  8. StreetMeasOnsumer3008

Me, a freak of the week? I always wondered what you look like Mamamcita. I'm pretty sure Fred (and other MLers who never met you) would be much happier with your elite freakiness than my one-track street meating ass. I don't mind doing it eventually though.

  9. Mamacita

Actually, most people here have met me already. Now quit flirting with me before Wayne and Rudy get jealous.

  10. StreetMeasOnsumer3008

    Ah cool.
Flirting? But I haven't even compared you a juicy and delicious halal plate filled with spicy hot sauce! No white sauce for you, right?

  11. StreetMeasOnsumer3008

I finally had the kofta/chicken combo with rice at the 53rd/6th lunchcart for lunch today.

I didn't really think much about the kofta since it looks like a piece of charcoaled turd but really wanted to try it. It turns out to be a very tasty chopped-up turd. I almost wished my whole plate was all kofta plate and no chicken. Is it me or have the portions gotten smaller? Maybe less rice (not a bad thing if it's only less rice).

    The +:
    Delicious kofta
    Good sauces as usual
Cheap $5 combo (No mystery extra buck charged)

    The -:
Ordinary chicken (I finally had enough of it)
Long line (It can't be helped)
Portions seem slightly smaller today (I didn't get my usual signs of nausea or exhaustion from over-eating so maybe the super-sizing stopped)

It's still one of the best $5 lunches in Midtown. I don't think I need the chicken anymore (not after eating better chicken at Steak Truck but they don't have better lamb). I should ask for a Kofta and Lamb combo next time. Even a lamb or kofta with falafel combo might be better. Hopefully they are only $5-6 bucks each.

  12. adamprato

StreetMeasOnsumer3008 is vying to be adopted by Zach for his very own MiniMe.

  13. Mamacita

Either that or he's itching to get a restraining order

  14. StreetMeasOnsumer3008

Nah, nothing Mini about me. I'd be more of a Dr. Evil. One... Hundred... BILLION STREET CART PLATTERS!

Restraining order? I guess you would be very familiar with those than anyone else, Mamacita?

  15. dougiec

I agree with the other regulars. You're scaring the crap out of me kid.

  16. StreetMeasOnsumer3008

HAHA. Oh well. The only thing I'm after is cheap food recommendations, great laughs, and a possible judging berth before the year 3000. Not like I'm here chasing after Mamacita, or harassing any of the other ladies of ML.

  17. StreetMeasOnsumer3008

Another weekly of street meating and I conquered a plate of Shendy's today. Man, I feel bloated. I really wanted Steak Truck today or at least lamb/kofta at 53rd/6th or even tackle another greek salad at 100% H&H so I don't have to die at the gym later but decided to check out Shendy's after the white sauce topic earlier today.

These guys don't play around with their white sauce. That sauce is all over your plate and you don't even need to do any vigorous mixing to cover each bite. I had a chicken and lamb with yellow rice. They also have a white rice option. The chicken is plump, juicy, but no distinct seasoning as it was really powered by the white sauce. The lamb was alright. I could barely taste the seasoning. I think the tomato was the only thing I could really taste from the plate (separate from the white and hot sauce). Overall a good value for $5. The cover/sauce dude smiled at me weirdly and asked me if I'm from Korea though. WTH, I tell him I'm American/ born here. He then asked me if I'm chinese...

    The+:
Overflowing white sauce (Maybe too much of a good thing)
    Plump chicken chunks
    "Friendly" staff
    Good combo deal at $5

    The-:
    Mainly taste white-sauce and tomato
    Mild-mannered hot sauce
    Average rice and lamb
Halal Guys and Imposter are a block over

Not a real neg but I also started noticing how unfresh their lettuce is (It had brown ends where it was cut. Thanks Steak Truck - you ruined lettuce for me with your fresher leafy greens). Good thing their platter is $5 or there is no way they could compete with 53rd/6th famous and fake. I still prefer 53rd & 6th famous because they have better hot sauce, tasty lamb not drowned in white sauce, and kofta option!

I'm growing into the habit of washing down Street Meats with iced coffee from the ING Cafe on 49th. It really hits the spot. I also drink viet. iced coffee when eating pho.

  18. wayne

StreetMeatTumor, your Delta Chi rush name is... Grandpa Simpson

  19. StreetMeasOnsumer3008

No thanks, I'm not pledging Delta Chi or any frat. From the picture, it looks like Lil Wayne enjoys hazing to the extreme!

I wouldn't be Grandpa anyway. I would look more like Homer after many eyars of Street Meats.

  20. ESNY

Actually, you'll probably more resemble Comic book store guy

  21. StreetMeasOnsumer3008

    WORST response ever?
    Nah, not Comic Book Guy.
Homer was making out with a whole hunk of lamb in one episode, Dial N for Nerder. Now that's street meat love.

  22. StreetMeasOnsumer3008

Third time was the charm (Errr, fourth time ordering it. My 1st time they ran out of lamb). I went back to Steak Truck today to get my own "garbage" combo plate. It finally had everything it promised. Pita, falafel and fries so thank gooness they came though.

Today's combo was okay overall. I didn't get to hit up their twit special before 12noon for 4.99. Oh well. Salad is fresh as usual, craisins again. Chicken is flavorful. Yellow Rice was okay and according to their twit, they serving basmati rice at 12-1? Lamb was lil burnt and didn't really appreciate picking out the scattered pieces of char/ carcinogens. Falafel was very dry. Not greasy and oily like the other time.
I'm just happy I finally have a complete combo platter. No need to hunt down their combo anymore. I can move on with their chicken only whenever I'm in that mood.

ING Cafe Iced coffee again. My beverage of choice near my office it seems. I also wish the Eggs Travaganza stayed open through lunch. I had their chorizo, egg, cheese on a roll last week - very good brekfast choice. I'll try not to make it my third week a row but I guess I need something to fill that void left after my once-a-week Street Meats habit.

  23. Mamacita

The Lamb "scattered pieces of char/ carcinogens"
are what most people here call the tasty crispy bits. My favorite lamb or chicken has been on the grill top getting caramelized and crispy for a while. Zach has described this much better than I in the past.

  24. StreetMeasOnsumer3008

Well, I should've been more specific but I meant the black soot/ dark charcoal particles that has NO MEAT on it. The little char are not the same as the little meat bits, dude. That's pure carcinogen and it's smaller than the rice pellets. I'm just guessing it came from the lamb but it could've been scrapped right off the grill itself.

I wouldn't waste meat - burnt or otherwise - but I wouldn't openly inhale the extra uselss char too when it doesn't add flavor or any value to my meal.

Mamacita, do you just pretend it's extra black pepper/ spice when you eat your Street Meats with extra white sauce? :)

  25. StreetMeasOnsumer3008

I thought I would tackle the Little Morocco cart today. After reading about their hot sauce and flavors, I wanted a plate too!
I'm glad I didn't stick to my once-a-week Street Meats. Well, it was still once this week for lunch. And once for dinner so I didn't break my rule too badly. Plus Steak Truck - been there/ done that - I really need a new platter to knaw on.

Today started off well with the breakfast sandwich at the Egg Travaganza truck. Lunch wasn't very promising - rummaged through my old Cheez-Its box. I had to grab a salad at Au Bon Pain so I could go work out at gym without starving. The mandarin chicken salad with sesame ginger dressing was alright. I leave my gym and decided to head toward Little Morocco to get there around 8:30pm. I order the combo with mixed rice. The guy even threw in fries on my plate too, covered it with white sauce and hot sauce. I immediately walked over to 40th Street and start wolfing down the plate, standing up.
I noticed how scrambled and delicous everything looked. Chucks of chicken/lamb, flavorful rice, black beans I didn't ask for but not heavy amount, didnt see any pintos, standard lettuce and tomato, and this is new: cilantro/coriander too? Hey, it works! I was surprised to see cilantro in my Street Meats. More flavor in their beast of a combo.

    The+:
    Decent amount of Meats
Mixed rice and hot sauce has flavor
There's beans and fries! Cilantro too!
    Excellent $5 dinner choice

    The-:
Average chicken/ lamb despite the spices
    Very salty feeling lingers
Rice is a little dry and XPL is still the leader
Hot sauce didn't melt my face off and barely knew white sauce was around

The harissa has flavor but definitely not the spiciest hot sauce around. I wolfed down the entire thing without a drink and felt fine. Good platter but little too salty for me (my fault for not having Iced Coffee on-hand and probably dehydrated from gym).
I will say this: Best Streets Meats I had this week. Steak Truck didn't even cut it. I hope Little Morocco upsets a lot of carts in SMP3. Their shoestring fries are better than the soggy waffle fries, rice is tastier, and hot sauce is better. Steak Truck will only win by fresher greens but no cilantro. I don't think I need to go back to Steak Truck anytime soon...maybe til SMP3 is around the corner. More flavors and it's only $5!!!!

    Steak Truck,

Thanks for commenting in Forums. Who knew I would draw this attention from you? You guys have fresh cilantro in your food? I didn't even notice. If you read my prior entry, I said I LIKED cilantro that Little Morocco put in their plate. If you put MORE sprigs of cilantro on where it's noticeable, then I would enjoy it TOO!!!

I just think Little Morocco has better spices.
I don't go to the nighttime 53rd & 6th very often. I usually go to the daytime 53rd & 6th. Their lamb is somewhat salty but their portions are bigger and more hefty. If anything, Little Morocco has a salty platter but they do not suck nor does my favorite 53rd &6th daytime.

Street Meats preference is all subjective and opinion-based. I didn't say I hate your food or anything. You still have the best greens around. Your chicken is flavorful too. I might be back for your chicken & rice but definitely no more combos.

  28. wayne

Steak Truck... don't mind him...StreetMeatTumor is also fucking insane. Carry on your good work.

  29. StreetMeasOnsumer3008

Wayne, shut the hell up. I don't go around commenting about your lack of decency. I have a right to my personal opinion on Street Meats as much as everyone else does. Are you a Communist or Fascist too? Shhhessh. Wayne the DICtator.

I wasn't insulting Steak Truck. They do good work. I just can't love all Street Meats equally. Not fair to do so. If you have so much love for Steak Truck, then you write about it instead of just bashing me all the time.

  30. wayne

it's all well & good until the Steak Truck loses an eye... poor Steak Truck...

Tumor, your tirades are overlong and douchey and now you prove you're touchy & humorless too... I've come to think of you as the asian Cockchug...

  31. StreetMeasOnsumer3008

Loses an eye? Oh please. Just my own opinion. We all got one.

Wayne, no one asked you to read my comments or entries. Plenty of other topics to review. If they're overlong, then why you even bothering to look? Skip forward like the fairy you are. We all got a right to express ourselves here. If you don't like what I'm saying, ignore it or do your own thing and confess your love for Steak Truck in your own entry. Don't waste of any of you un-charming attitude with me.

Im not your friend so who needs to humor you or play nice? If anything, you and chodchug belong together (DICtator and ChodChug sound like the perfect pair to me.) At least you don't see me going around insulting or provoking other MLers like you two do. I only talk about food and what I think. Nobody has to accept my opinion. I also gotta speak up for myself against low-lives like you when confronted. NEVER BACK DOWN!

  32. StreetMeasOnsumer3008

I had XPL on 48th and Park today. Their truck looked a lil different...probably cuz it was parked on Park Ave, out in the open instead of over the construction.

    The +:
    Price: $5
    Rice: Good flavor
Meats: Chicken with curry flavor done well
    Extras: Pita slices

    The-:
Meats: Lamb being not so juicy or as good as the chicken
    Sauce: Weak hot sauce

Overall: Good combo deal for $5
Possibility of return: Perhaps on a monthly basis

  33. Yvo

    StreetMeat is Asian?

  34. StreetMeasOnsumer3008

No? Maybe I can only fake my way through Cantonese and Chinese stuff...lol.

  35. Yvo

I thought that was weird, I've always been thinking of Wayne as Asian, and StreetMeat is more hmmm ... a nerdy white guy. Yes, with Harry Potter glasses. That's good. *nodding to self*

  36. deanlo

oh snap. yvo laying the smackdown in front of the Millions...

SMO3008, if it's worth anything, you shouldn't have to be a registered cart fanatic to qualify as a street meat judge. i mean, shouldn't there also be regular joe judges to balance out the more panel's more sophisticated palates?

  37. wayne

    Yvo is too funny...

My guess: StreetMeatTumor is asian, likely of Hong Kong origin, 30ish, strong case of OCD, a virgin or pretty darn close, hung like a brine shrimp.

    me, I'm the opposite

dean - SMP2 had at least 4 'regular' non-blogger non-cart-freak people there that I know of - Adam, Mama, Tom & myself

  38. Yvo

Wayne ... I don't know what the opposite of Asian is. According to Google, the opposite of yellow is purple. You're purple? That's... uhhh, interesting.

Also, with regard to Asians, you can't lump them all in one boat, just like you can't lump all Europeans in one boat. In terms of size, we've all heard of the Irish curse (or the Italian curse, depending on where you stand), well, in Asia, it varies by country of origin as well.

Besides, let's be blunt here. Penis size has very little if nothing to do with intelligence, nor the consumption of street meat, liking girls or boys, or really, any sort of corollary to any of this stuff. So anyone who wants to insult the other people on this board, please base it on actual facts ("You can't spell" because someone constantly misspells things, or "Your math is wrong" or even "I don't agree with your opinion on xx place so I think you are stupid") instead of speculation about a body part that has nothing to do with this board whatsoever.

I'm just saying, I think you are all capable of coming up with more creative insults than "my penis is bigger than yours" - especially unless you're willing to meet up and prove it to the other guy, it's a completely worthless insult.

    *getting off the soapbox*

  39. @wayne: You're a woman?!?

    @yvo: Aren't azns good at math? </sarcasm>
