...Or, another way of looking at it is, an established brick-and-mortar restaurant has their customers poached by a food truck parked right at their entrance. They battle this with a fair and reasonable method of marketing their food. It's a matter of perspective. I think the restaurant did the right thing: instead of throwing swear words and punches, they handed out samples of their food. I'm obviously all for the trucks, but come on...give the restaurants a bit of a break here.

Agreed... This site lambasts restaurants for trying to get trucks kicked out of their spot... and now we're going to lambast them for this? I think it's a fair and reasonable response.

yeah..only if people knew how much rent these restaurant/deli owners have to pay each month....

It's called competition, and frankly I like the way this mysterious place handled the situation rather than calling the cops.
*golf clap*

And the problem with giving out free samples is?

if the line is long and the price is right I am falling for it, ha ha

It's probably the same place that gave out free dumplings when the Rickshaw truck parked out front.
I agree with Pigiron and commend them for not calling the cops or some other governmental department to try and get them kicked out.
They realize that having the trucks parked there brings more pedestrian traffic to that block. They take advantage by giving out samples, and if their food is good, they gain new customers.
Win/win for all.

By all means there is nothing wrong with anyone handing out free samples...and good ones to boot! LOL My post was meant to express how I was in awe that a street truck has so many customers that a brick and mortar restaurant would try to lure its customers. By all means they handled the line well and if it was just free samples then I probably wouldn't even bother posting. But hearing them repeatedly say "come on in...there's no line" was what really had me chuckling. I might just have to go to that restaurant now and have a meal! LOL

Good idea but misguided. A sit down restaurant in that area is pricey to say the least. The people standing on line at a truck are "Midtown Lunchers" who dont want to spend more than $8 for a schnitz and go back to their office.

Whats funny is that this "well known restaurant with an entrance on 52nd street" (if its the one I'm thinking of) has other interesting tactics. For example, their happy hour "2.95 burger" ends up costing like 30 bucks with a few beers ($7 FOR A PINT OF COORS LIGHT? SAME PRICE FOR STELLA???) plus tax and tip.

I won't name any names here but some well known restaurant with an entrance on 52nd street who happend to have the Schnitzel Truck parked outside of it today had an interesting way of fighting back. .
This same restuarant had 2 employess come out and give free samples of one of its appetizer dishes to the folks waiting on line at the Schnitzel truck and was actually trying to entice people to skip the line and come in for lunch.
Again...won't name any names...but I thought it was truly a hillarious site. Restaurant's picking people off of a food truck line! Impressive how far food trucks have come!!
