Red Hook Lobster

Decided to try it today with a co worker... It was delicious... but man, that sandwich was WAY too small... Its not even going to come close to holding you over till dinner... The pictures from when midtownlunch first tried it seemed like the sandwich was a lot more heartier, stuffed with more lobster meat... What I had was def. not overflowing with lobster meat. Instead it had just enough to fill the roll... Is it a great sandwich? Absolutely! Would I eat it again for $16... Only if there is a buy one get one free deal.

  1. I also ate at Red Hook Lobster today and found the experience to be the same as Lou's. Tiny portions of lobster for the large price tag. It was a tasty sandwich, but they need to give more meat. I wouldn't go back to Red Hook Lobster.

Try Luke's. It's better. It's a bit heartier than Red Hook in my experience. I've had luke's a couple of times now. I enjoy it. It's expensive, but a worthwhile splurge every few weeks.

  3. As someone who isn't that big of a fan of lobster, tastewise I prefer Red Hook as opposed to Luke's even though they do give you more. I get the meal with the chips and drink. Holds me over until 4pm when I have a small piece of fruit.

  4. I went into Au Bon Pain last week for the free iced coffee and noticed a sign hanging which advertized their new lobster roll croissant.

    52nd and Lex location.

It's not my thing, but since we are talking lobster rolls...

I didn't catch the pricing of it.

I also think luke's is a better value. I tried to shrimp roll at the red hook lobster truck and was not impressed. The shrimp roll was made with tiny baby shrimp. For $9, at least give me real shrimp.

Lobster in NYC is just a rip, period. I was in a random bar just north of Boston last week, and they had a $12 lobster dinner: whole lobster, fresh-steamed, with fries and corn-on-the-cob. $16 for a crappy little roll? Nah.

Lobster Rolls are just expensive period. It's kind of silly to complain about a luxury item being "over priced."

There is this place in New Hampshire called the Beach Plum. It is the best lobster roll ever and it is still $18. I've also been to Reds Eats in Maine and market price Lobster Rolls are always in the high teens even there.

NY maybe skimps a little bit but they probably have higher shipping costs to get the product. I am from New England and am happy to pay for a either Luke's or Red Hook Lobster Pound but as a treat and with the full expectation that I might need a chowder too. But of course I'd rather go to the beach plum for a "foot long lobster roll" ->$32!

I think Stew Leonards--the grocery store in Yonkers-- does an 11 dollar lobster dinner as well--or at least they did. But I agree with itsjusttaste--for NYC, Luke's is reasonably fair for what you get, at least compared to any other place within City limits.

The best value for a lobster roll in NYC is at Fairway.

  10. Reds - what a crock! Reds makes a decent but PRICEY roll. If you go north and along the coast, you can get a GREAT roll at Brenda's for a reasonable price, or 2 GOOD ones for 10 bucks if you go down Boothbay or Pemaquid way.

    $14 bucks. SRSLY?

yeah but Stew keeps getting nailed for not paying his taxes. All cash business. But i guess cheap lobster is the pay off.

As long as the lobster is cheap and untainted, Stew can play wesley snipes roulette for years to come for all I care...
