Reading Terminal

hungry

I'm headed to Reading Terminal in Philly on Saturday. I'll be having lunch there (for hours) and would like to try lots of different things.

So far, I'm planning on going to:
Dinic's
Delilah's
Miller's Twist
Salumeria
Bassett's
4th St Cookies

Maybes:
Dutch Eating Place
Down Home Diner
Termini's
Hershel's
Dienner
Beilers

Any suggestions for me? Should any of my maybes become 'must gos'?

  1. Salumeria is fine, but kind of boring.

As for the maybes, I'd suggest for dessert you either do the apple dumpling from Dutch Eating Place, a Whoopie Pie from Beiler's, or carrot cake from Termini (serious crack).

I prefer the Delilah's in 30th St (Turkey Meatloaf!!!) but Oprah does love that mac n' cheese...

I also personally think Sang Kee is the best stall in the whole market...

Dinics pulled pork for sure! And I second the Apple Dumpling.

If my pictures from the po' boy post tempted you, Beck's Cajun is right next to Dinics.

Also, By George makes fresh pasta to order, its located towards the back right of Reading Terminal. Really worth taking some home.

  3. Sang Kee in the market is overrated, especially since Chinatown (with a "real" Sang Kee) is a few blocks away. (All I'm saying is Roast Ducks/Pork require a big oven...and there's a lack of said ovens at the Sang Kee stall in the market)

I third the Apple Dumpling at Dutch Eating Place but make sure you order it at the registered don't pick up one of the prepackaged ones.

Bassetts is a definite must do, if even just to sit at the original counters.

For something REALLY different stop by Muellers and try the chocolate covered onion...

  4. the cookies in the northeast corner are awesome. also you'll want to subscribe to bob libkind's blog and probably meet him asap. he's the undisputed king of RTM knowledge and experience.

the bbq place in the northwest corner is also great. i wish the beer garden was better. those pretzels are amazing. get some pickles at the pickle patch. scrapple sandwich at Dutch Eating Place.

the turkey sandwich jawn really surprised me. you get a killer hand-sliced turkey sandwich with cranberry and stuffing all year 'round!

but if you're in the neighborhood and REALLY want to kill it you need to head underneath the overpass in the convention center (head east) and hit up Dim Sum Garden for Soup Dumplings! (xiao long bao, i think). just order #1 on the menu!

@peetah- WHAT on earth is a chocolate covered onion like?

@mattohara- gonna have to disagree with you about the cookies, not bc they are bad but bc they are $2 for ONE medium size decent cookie, what is that about??
unless we are talking about different places.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I'm going to skip any Asian places because I'm Asian! Hah! I always like go outside of my own cuisine when I travel. Well, unless I'm in Asia.

@Jamie: Oyster Po Boy! Oh baby, you're speaking my language.

  7. @Jamie the chocolate covered onion tastes exactly like what you expect, pretty horrible - but you've gotta try it once right (and no it is NOT a sweet onion, more like your garden variety "hot" onion)

@hungry if you're up for it the Reading Terminal Tour (http://www.tasteofphillyfoodtour.com/) isn't bad (it isn't good either), the host is a little eccentric but its a good introduction to the market if you've never been plus food samples abound

@peetah: Thanks for the link. Unfortunately, I won't be there in time for the tour. However, I'm not one to shy away from going solo. I'll have about 4 hours Saturday so I think that's plenty to see the whole place.

  9. @Peetah -- completely agree...you can't get good peking duck without an oven. That said, for ~$6.00, I haven't found anything in the market that I prefer to Sang Kee's roasted duck plate. I dream of it sometimes.

I've heard good things about Nanee's too but I never try it.

Somehow I've forgotten about Flying Monkey's peanut butter brownies...mmm!

  10. @Jamie How was the portion on the Po' Boy? I got the Gator Gumbo after they opened and thought it was well spiced and enjoyable, but a little pricey for the size.

  11. that's odd, i don't remember them being that expensive but it's been a while.

and Nanee's makes their own lassi, and it's delicious. try them all. and the amish guy that makes his own juices up on the north wall has a great "everything" juice. i think it's called the Thirst Clencher.

    @philamets

    1) flying monkey lavender cupcakes are my favorite of theirs so far, yummmmm
    2) the oyster po boy came with (I think) 4 big oysters, I know I was definitely full from that alone, but I could see how a bigger person than me might not be, thats where the cornbread or whiskey bread pudding can come in! Its not a totally cheap ass lunch, but its worth it. I mean, I would be pretty nervous if my oyster sandwich cost only a few bucks...

  13. check out brown betty bakery in northern liberties next.
