Ok In my hood I'll say Zibettos 56th &6th.

Joe: The Art Of Coffee
Tim Horton's
and the Peet's Coffee served at ING CafeI would include Dunkin' Donuts but only as a standard coffee go-to and to buff-out any Starbucks voters. If any of the above were near my hood, I would pass on DD.
McDonald's coffee over Starbucks too. Heck, even BK Joe. Haha.

I do not pay premium prices for coffee. I would if it were better than the cheap alternatives, but it's generally not.
1. Ess-A-Bagel
2. McDonalds- yes, it really is very good
3. The morning cart on the NE corner of 50th and 3rd -
Is Bouchon Bakery out of ML range? They have awesome coffee. If they don't count, I'd have to choose Zibettos.

Zibettos.
-
Theres a Bouchon at the Time Warner Columbus Circle.

how about the kind you brew yourself in a french or aero press, from fresh ground whole beans, preferably bought from 1) porto rico, 2) stumptown, or 3) gorilla coffee. anything else is just.. eh.
-
also, @pigiron, mickey d's, for serious? if you think good coffee isn't that much better than mcd's, then i PROMISE YOU you have never had a cup of truly good coffee (and no, i am not talking starbucks)
-
@barnettd- Pretty sure Zach means actual stores/carts that are located in Midtown.
BTW- Can you recommend where I can buy a french or aero press? I buy whole beans from Mcnulty's when I can.

I think McDonald's coffee is definitely better than starbucks though. McCafe is taking off.
I wasn't big on Mickey D's coffee back in the day but they haven't been bad or disappointing like starbucks' regular coffee. Most of us know you do not go to starbucks for their regular coffee. As I'm not a fancy coffee drinker, Mickey D's is almost there. For a higher quality, I go with Joe's of course. Mud Truck by Astor Place is decent too but that's not Midtown. Oren's regular coffee is worth considering too. I've had the gorilla coffee at babycakes in LES and that coffee is okay. -
definitely the peet's at the ING cafe. also the coffee cart on the NW corner of 50th and lex.

@barnettd: I understand the hostility towards McD's, but I might not have been all that clear on my point. I love great coffee and I go to great lengths to make the good stuff at home (as a matter of fact, I buy my beans at Porto Rico and I use a French Press, just as you suggest). My point is that the good stuff, when brewed at a cafe, is stupidly expensive. While it's almost always going to be fresher and tastier than McD's, it's not fresher and tastier ENOUGH to justify the cost in my opinion. I'm watching my money these days like most folks, and this issue is a no-brainer.
That being said, I really do like the coffee at McDonalds, but I despise everything else about that place. I travel a lot, and I don't eat at national chain restaurants- period. I eat local. I'll patronize those other places for a soda or a coffee, but I will not eat. That may not make sense to everyone, but them's my rules.

It's time for the 2009 Midtown Lunch reader's poll, and we're soliciting for nominees. To nominate your favorite COFFEE in Midtown just post it below. Just remember it has to be within the ML boundaries (sorry Stumptown!)
Discussion is welcome, but please limit actual nominations to one per person (but you can nominate as many places as you'd like in your one post.) Official nominees will be announced, and voting will begin on December 16th.
