I made some yesterday, and they were fresh and tasty. It's very easy, takes about 10 minutes, one bowl, a box of latke mix (plus the listed add-ins--egg, oil, water), and one hot frying pan (plus a bit of oil). C'mon, you can do it!!!

a little off topic but i just went to zaftigs over the weekend for and got a lupo. ton of brisket with jus between 2 giant latkes. not really sure if it's kosher but it was definitely awesome.

a Mix?? boo.... 3 grate potatoes, 1 onion, 1 egg. salt and pepper, and fry away!

Thanks for the recipes, but I'm busy with a full-time job and finals for the grad program I'm in right now. I know how to make them, I've been helping my mom since I was a wee girl. It's easy, but it's messy and time-consuming, both things I have no time to deal with right now, hence my desire for a restaurant.
deanlo - where's zaftigs?
-
it's in Boston :X take the Green line going on C branch and get off at Coolidge Corner. hehe
-
I've been to Zaftigs. No wonder it sounded so familiar. Great food there.
-
As for Cafe Edison, I've never been but Always Hungry had a great write up about them: http://www.alwayshungryny.com/thought-for-food/entry/featured-restaurant-cafe-edison/

just saw this on TIWYF, which gave me the runaround until i finally found the original poster as none other than mr brooks himself on behalf of serious eats

who'da thunk we could get something this close to home?

I'll have to try Zaftig's next time I go to Boston!
I'm not sure I'm equal tot he task of the Latke & brisket sandwich. That thing is scary.
Luckily for me, though, Always Hungry NY answered my question: http://www.alwayshungryny.com/thought-for-food/entry/top-5-latkes/
Guess I have to find time to go to Veselka. Pierogi and Latkes make a balanced meal, right?
-
Ooh, Veselka also has good burgers... so my friend says, I was meatless when we went so I didn't get one. (They're on the top 50 NYC burgers list by NY Mag) Maybe burgers and latkes?
-
Dunno about Veselka, but this reminds me of Neptune on 1st near 12th St., which has excellent Polish food. I haven't tried their potato pancakes but I'm sure they are excellent. They also have a selection of very strong Polish beers.
-
deanlo: Have you been to the Eagle Deli in Brookline (by Cleveland Circle)? They have seriously massive burgers, etc. They are closed until the end of the year for renovations, tho.
-
stevenp, OH MY FRIKKIN GOURD. i was looking up Eagle's Deli because it sounded so familiar and then I realized I had seen that on Man v Food and Best Places to Pig Out. Looks like I might have to go back to Boston after all...
back to the topic, a few doors down from Veselka is Ukrainian East Village, which also has potato pancakes. both places have awesome sauerkraut pierogi/varenyky.

Since the Diamond Dairy is no more, does anyone have any suggestions as to where one might find good latkes for Chanukkah? I'll be having the ones my mom makes (if I'm lucky) on Saturday, but I'm hoping to get my fix a bit earlier.
I know that the Carnegie Deli makes them, am hoping to avoid that place, due to the prices and tourists.
Has anyone tried them at Cafe Edison? Should I aim for Sarge's or the 2nd Ave Deli (I haven't had them there since they moved uptown, but I remember they were the size of a dinner plate.)
