Pollo Tropical

teeody

Hi Zach,

I have recently come across your blog, and I have become an instant fan. Honestly, great coverage, advice and comments! I have one question for you though, in reading your write up for Famous Chicken place on 3rd, you mentioned Pollo Tropical from your home town of Miami. I know you mentioned the locations in NJ and I was just wondering if you have heard anything about the quality, standards, or cleanliness of these locations. I live in NJ and they recently(maybe longer) opened up shop in Metuchen NJ, and I was curious if it is worth the trip. Every one of your picks was an absolute home run in my book by the way. I’ve tried just about everything from Zach's picks and the readers poll results, except for a few stragglers and I’m totally impressed!

Thanks A lot,
teeody

Actually, just a few weeks ago I ate at the Pollo Tropical right off the highway as you exit the Lincoln Tunnel. it was pretty much just like it is Miami. I enjoyed myself, but I don't know if it's worth a huge trip out of your way... if it was in Midtown I would eat there more often than Famous Chicken Place (but that's just me!)

    I live around Metuchen.
The location is always busy [atleast when I'm there] and seems like it has good turn over so the food isn't stale.

Sometimes it gets alil sloppy around the sauce area, but hey....it happens, the sauces are good!

    Overall I'd give it a 8 out of 10.

been to one in Florida. It's less intimidating than venturing to a real hispanic place. It's not bad for what it is, chain hispanic food. Some are reviewed better than others, just like any other chain. Give it a try and report back. I want to go the other way and try the Sonic in Hasbrouck Heights. I heard the police had to come and they ran out of food, ha ha.

OK -so i went to the one in Metuchen, NJ and it was pretty good. The chicken was great. My wife had the roast pork and it was OK, but a little dry. The fried yuca and plantains were also ok, but nothing special. Like Zach said above, it is a good place if you are close to one, but don't go out of your way.
