Pho (midtown to village)?

stevenp

Can anyone suggest a place for great pho somewhere between midtown and the village? (Halfway, e.g. flatiron, would be preferable). Bonus points for a good vegetarian pho (no beef/chicken stock). Must have big bottles of sriracha ready to be squeezed! Thx.

    Having eaten Vietnamese in the mother land AND on both coasts, I submit that ... I can't dispute what you said because I don't have your taste buds and ultimately the concept of 'better' depends on your palate. and that's a personal thing :)

    Well, if we're comparing e-peen's;

    Having spent significant time living in, and trying Vietnamese food in NorCal (SFO/SJ), Pacific Northwest, New York and Northern Virginia, I can safely say that Northern VA probably has the best, followed closely by NorCal.

    hey chris6s, i have to agree northern va has some good viet. i had an excellent meal in Eden about 10 years ago when my uncle was getting married. had the most awesome 3 item grilled pork over rice but I can't remember the name of the place. oh man the cravingssssssss

    I'm going to concur with dean's assessment that palate is a personal preference

    I still prefer to eat pho without the hoisin sauce. I need lots of sriracha, black pepper and lime. Bean sprouts and basil leaves are optional. Sometimes, gotta wash it down with the iced coffee too.

    Palate is personal preference, but it's a fact that unless you are talking about banh mi- overall the Vietnamese restaurants in S.F. are far better than Vietnamese restaurants in NYC.

    A tourist from Los Angeles could walk into three pizza parlors in NYC, and declare that "The pizza in New York City isn't nearly as good as the pizza in L.A." But it wouldn't make it true (personal preference or not!) Chicago vs. NYC pizza? Argue away. Asian food in L.A. vs. Asian Food in S.F.? Have at it. But some truths are undeniable.

    L.A. has mostly shitty pizza. NYC has mostly shitty Vietnamese food.

    Stevenp: The only pho place i know of, and have tried, in midtown lunch boundaries is this place on 8th avenue between 51st and 52nd called Zheng's Lucky Sunday Garden. It's a Chinese resto but they do serve certain Vietnamese dishes, like pho. Do not expect to be wowed by the pho, but on certain days, when you crave that beef broth and have no other options in midtown, the $7.50 bowl will do the trick, and leave you satisfied.

    as for vegetarian pho, i have yet to see anything similar served in NYC, let alone midtown. but i do have a recommendation for veggie pho if you ever find yourself in Seattle, WA. Than Brothers has various seattle locations but the one in Capitol Hill on Broadway has the best veggie pho i'd ever come across. and nothing beats the free homemade cream puff served with every order!
