Didn't need to be cooked? Oh man. LOL.
And I'm not a big fan of the peanut sauce so I use it sparingly. Then again, I don't usually eat summer rolls. I like the greasy goodness of fried spring rolls more.Enjoy!
-
Well, I soaked them, so they were soft! I'm not that stupid!
-
Nah, no way you would put in dry noodles. Then you shouldn't even be cooking. Take out for life.
I can understand not cooking them though. Oh well. Now we all know what a culinary expert you are. ;) -
I am not nor have I ever claimed to be an expert about food :)
-
EEVO, that must have been like eating plastic.
smo, spring/summer rolls are so 90's. nem nuong rolls are where it's at.
-
Go make me some nem nuong rolls and we'll talk. And it was more like eating really starchy ... strange ... noodles... I posted about it because I wanted someone to tell me what noodles I really should have gotten instead :P
-
I'm sure I've eaten nem noung - pork meatballs form instead of a patty - before at my friend's Viet family BBQ and nem noung rolls do look good. http://ravenouscouple.blogspot.com/2009/05/nem-nuong-cuon-spring-rolls-with.html
I still prefer deep-fried (hmmm, deep-fry the nem noung rolls to a slight crisp..lol). Regular spring rolls are one of my go-to's for unhealthy snackage. Nothing like munching on shrimp chips and spring rolls while the BBQ is getting ready. Well, Lumpia Shanghai FTW with sweet-n-sour sauce for me but viet spring rolls are just as good!! ;P
I could go for a Spicy banh mi nem noung though. That would hit the spot.

I've seen that blog post before and I think their rolling technique and composition are terrible. :X
speaking of terrible, here is a terrible picture of a layout with ingredients that are so much easier to wrap.

Taken with my point and shoot at that famous place I can't remember the name of in Nha Trang. note the orange shrimp sauce and triangular banh trang

Did you just show us pictures of food in Vietnam? Dude. Just... dude. And wow, if you think Ravenous Couple has poor composition (presuming you mean photography), no wonder you don't read my blog... lol
-
i know. i'm supercereally snooty like that.
and i meant to say their ... roll construction technique, not composition. meat was cut too thick, cross-section is trapezoidal, deep fried straws have too many layers...
i read your blog from time to time. :) i can't help it if I Google random things like "yakiniku juju" and ff is in the top 3 results

Yvo, you have a cool blog. I enjoy the food porn at times.
Dean seems to have a high standard for Viet food. Is it due to your heritage? Or you just expect perfection for your foods?
Sadly (being the dude ordering take-out at a Cantonese place and surely I will do it again,)I don't have the refined palate for most of asian cuisines. Not for chinese food, not for sushi, not for korean, etc. Probably only for street meats, pizza, and fries though.
-
Thanks! But I don't have a refined palate at all. I just like what I like, which is what I talk about on my site ad nauseum. If you happen to be someone who likes the same things as I do, that's great! If not, well, my site sucks then.
I didn't think Dean was Vietnamese based on his last name though
-
Same here. That's why I will continue to eat my General Tso's, Meat w. Broccoli, and Fortune cookies. lol.
I didn't think so either before but after a few rounds of replies it began to sound like he is. Maybe he's Vietnamese of Chinese descent? The banh mi saigon people speak Cantonese and so does your fav. Pho place - the manager there speaks Cantonese and Viet. Now I'm just complicating things. HAHA.
-
Actually, I don't think I've been to a Vietnamese place where they DON'T speak Cantonese. My ex was Chinese from Vietnam; his parents or maybe grandparents fled China to Vietnam/Cambodia to escape Communism or something, I think. A lot of Vietnamese/Cambodian/Laotian and I believe Thai/Malaysian as well are actually Chinese descent. It's a pretty common progression it seems.

Can anyone suggest a place for great pho somewhere between midtown and the village? (Halfway, e.g. flatiron, would be preferable). Bonus points for a good vegetarian pho (no beef/chicken stock). Must have big bottles of sriracha ready to be squeezed! Thx.
