WHAT?! That's ridiculous! I haven't been to HK yet and now they're eliminating one of the biggest reasons I want to go!?

Can you still drink outside?

From the author of the article that is linked above:
"I can't believe how quickly you guys picked up my blog post from the Times. Could you please add this comment from me...
I can't believe people actually care about this little local issue on the other side of the world -- so thanks!
Rest assured that whatever the government decides has little effect on what stubborn, spirited Hong Kongers actually do.
There's still plenty of eating on the street -- from posh downtown restaurants, to dinky seaside places where they pull a fish out of the sea and serve it to you on a plastic table, from the "gardens" at luxury hotels, to cheap curries and stir-fries in "Rat Alley." And, yes. You can still stand like a drunken idiot out on the streets of Lan Kwai Fong, holding a beer.
Please don't let my post discourage any of you from visiting what I think it one of the top food cities.
All the "ban" will do it make it harder for restaurateurs, who will have to spend alot of money paying for fines and licenses, and time trying to dodge inspectors. Seriously, the whole thing is so mad, it makes me want to use the kind of language I'm not allowed to, writing for the Times. : )
If any of you make it over here and want alfresco dining tips, you can contact me through my personal site.http://joycelau1.spaces.live.com

@Yvo: You'd better get your ass over there ASAP. seriously, you're gonna be real sorry you didn't if you don't get a chance to try it.

There's a small group in one of the HK neighborhoods and they're getting signatures for a petition. Here's the link

I know that this is Midtown Manhattan but us foodies have to at least say "This is Not Cool" to the Hong Kong local city council

A Ban Looms, but Outdoor Dining Still Alive in Hong Kong (NYT, June 30th)
By Joyce Hor-Chung Lau
HONG KONG | In its near-obsession with tidying up the city, the Hong Kong government can impose some silly restrictions. Like the recent one against walking up the escalators in the MTR subway system. Or the one against sitting outside to eat.
