NEW YORK -- The city's board of health voted to require restaurants to display large letter grades near their entrances. It will indicate how clean they were in their last health inspections.

The public grading system is designed to give potential customers instant access to information about where they're about to eat.

The health department says most of the restaurants it inspects each year maintain good or excellent health conditions. But about a quarter of them have significant problems.

The plan approved Tuesday came after a public hearing and monthlong open comment period.

Restaurants that receive grades lower than an "A'' have time to improve their sanitary conditions before they have to post anything.

Having lived in letter-graded cities, I have to say it isn't a big deal. You get used to it and then ignore it after a while. It's sometimes rife with bribes and politics to get a good grade, so after a while the grades are secondary. Tasty food is what matters.

    Cool.
Mama, you're going to check out ALL the C- and below and report back to us, right? Pretty please. :)

cleanliness is one of the most important things about cooking. if you don't know how to clean and care for your plates/pots/pans then you shouldn't be cooking at all.

I hesitantly welcome the letter grades ... but my support really depends on what an A represents. One mouse and a couple of roaches honestly won't affect me as much as mold and botulism.

You'd be shocked at how filthy a lot of places that serve good food are, esp 3rd world food. Duck's drying in the window? Yeah, that's healthy, lol

  5. YEEEES. Let the world know how "clean" the restaurant next door is.
