if you're sticking to the lunch menu, i like their double cooked pork. their beef with string beans is pretty good too. i hate their pork with garlic sauce bc of the veggies they use. people at my office swear by their general tso's.

off the lunch menu, i love their mapo tofu though the last time i got it, it was way too salty and peppery. their dan dan noodles are pretty good. and the tripe and ox tongue cold app is delicious.

i love this place. I second the double cooked pork and tripe/tongue appetizer. I also like the sauteed pumpkin and the sour cabbage w/ fish soup.

Really great authentic Chinese/Japanese restaurant over on 55th between 5th and Ave of the Americas. It's called Menchanko-Tei. They serve up an awesome selection of ramen and noodle dishes, along with the usual fried rice, etc.

I wrote a review on it a few weeks ago: http://www.thesavvysoybean.com/1/post/2010/01/homemade-noodles-at-menchanko-tei.html

    Enjoy!

wow.. um... i guess that passes as a recommendation... i mean Menchanko-Tei only has one (i think?) Chinese-inspired dish on their menu and it is the cha shu men. But the flavors are wholly Japanese.

actually what am I saying? Menchanko-tei isn't at all Chinese!

They have a wonton men too but I'd still consider Menchanko-Tei as Japanese!

Deanlo, no need to be an asshole about it. Sheesh.

My apologies. I did not mean to come off as an asshole. But honestly, I was insulted by your post too. I just get offended when people recommend a Japanese ramen and soup bar as a place for cheap Chinese food.

Chinese food and Japanese food isn't the same at all but it's like no one even knows or cares to make that distinction anymore. They all just lump Asian cuisine into one giant umbrella of 'food eaten with chopsticks.' And this type of bigotry in turn blurs the lines of authenticity.

This type of culinary origination generalization defaces my favorite cuisine of all time -- more so than American style Chinese food. But that's another thread.

So I guess what provoked me to respond in that manner was the proliferation of these fallacies. I was acting emotionally because I deeply respect food. And I don't want people thinking Menchanko-Tei is a Chinese/Japanese fusion restaurant because it isn't -- it is authentic Japanese fare.

And that includes you. Nothing personal, SS. I just feel that it's important for everyone to know that this place isn't a Chinese/Japanese restaurant. I mean if people went there expecting cheap Chinese food, I think they would be pretty upset to find mid-priced soups and a menu written in Japanese...

You can tell I care about food because (aside from this outburst) I actually wrote very passionately about food and language in my blog last week as an introduction to part 1 of my cooking class at Saveur magazine.
