Midtown Dinner

Chris H.

A thread to share/brag about your favorite Midtown dinner spots - from late night expense-able meals (cheap) to taking the clients out for a rager (expensive).

I highly highly highly recommend Marea - the Sifton review is spot on. Ricci, uni topped with a filament of cured pork fat, is on my death row menu. Their rightly famous fusilli with uni and baby octopus did not disappoint. I also enjoyed the uovo dish - halibut with wild mushrooms and a soft cooked egg. Flawless wine service and a refined, yet not too stuffy dining room made the experience worthy of the 3 NYT stars or the recently awarded Michelin star.

So what are your favorite dinner places in Midtown?

Hagi is also perennial favorite of mine, even more-so because the total tab usually comes within range of the expense limit for 'overtime' dinners. Yellowtail collar, okonomiyaki and tons of beer and shochu cocktails help take the edge off a 14 hour day.

    Ipanema / 13 W.46th (btw 5th & 6th).

The owner owns the building and operates a hotel above the restaurant (this is probably why he keeps the prices so low). The drinks are moderately priced, but the food is quite inexpensive. In December, I will have been going 12 years, and it's my default restaurant when people ask me to organize a dinner outing. Dinner/appetizers/drinks would run about $30-$35/pp, and you'll leave totally stuffed.

They specialize in Brasilian and Portugese dishes (not rodizio where they serve skewered roasted meats at the table, but homestyle dishes). All dinners come with rice and black beans, and the meat dishes come with fried potatoes. They make a fantastic Caipirinha as well (offering the upscale Leblon as well as the standard Pitu).

I've literally brought about 100 people there over the past 11 years, and though none of them hated it, I can only name maybe 4 people who didn't love the food there.

Damn, Ipanema has all of my fav Portuguese food - kalo verde, bolinhos ds bacalhau and feijoada! Now if only they have arroz de cabidela... mmm, duck blood.

Funny. Feijoada is the national dish of brasil, and the locals eat it (I forgot to mention that Ipanema is always stocked with natives, which is always a good sign).

Most people (including myself) have loved the feijoada. I love beans, but theres such a thing as too much black beans :)

  5. Hagi's food has gone down hill a bit. For casual Japanese fare, I prefer Takesushi on 2nd and 54th. The place has fast become an old reliable and a place for weekly visit. Because the owner of the restaurant runs a fish business on the side, the fish is super fresh. What sets Takesushi apart is its non-Sushi fare. The kushi-katsu options are great, especially the fried oysters are some of the best I've had. The hamachi-kama far surpasses the ones served by Hagi in terms of quantity and quality.

Wu Liang Ye. I'm spoiled for decent sit-down Chinese now.

i'm going to second hagi going downhill. The food is just not that good here and everytime I've been, there's flies buzzing around the table.

So i tried Alto last night. Not nearly as good as Marea (they should flip the Michelin stars around), but worth visiting. Ox-tail and foie gras terrine was fantastic, as was the tagliatelle with veal ragu, but the bone marrow crusted halibut was a little boring and dry.

I'm thinking about trying the Bar Room at the Modern next - anyone have opinions on the venue or specific menu items?
