lunches <= $6

So being the cheap bastard that I am.. many times.. I will opt for less desirable options to keep my lunch at around 5$ pre-tax and under $6 post-tax... but these options that I know of suck... (i.e. subway $5 footlong, dunkin donuts flatbread..) I know that most of the chicken/lamb and rice places are <= $6... but what are your favorite lunches in midtown that are <= $6 (post-tax)?

  1. There is a place on 38th between 5th & 6th - I don't recall the name- it's a deli -looking place that serves pizza, that has daily specials that are always under 5 bucks. Monday is a gyro, Tuesday is 2 slice of pizza, Wednesday is an ok cheeseburger for $3.95, I think Friday is a big salad. They also usually have a stromboli or something for $4.95 and they have chili and soups for under 5...

I don't work in Midtown but falafel sandwich is like $3 http://3buckbites.com/price/cheap/falafel-sandwich-at-sams-falafel/ (Full disclosure: I wrote that)

This is a great site http://3buckbites.com/ though organized a bit poorly, search by NY.

I've had some good lunch combos off the BK value menu at 40th/7th. They even have a few healthier options. And the chicken parm at Labeleca (also at 40th/7th) is barely over $6 but well worth a few cents more.

Mix and match at Cafe Zaiya - Each triangle onigiri is about $1.75, spicy chicken sandwich is $3ish, mochi donut is $1.25, chicken and scallion pizza is $2.25, spicy tun bun is around $2.

  5. While these are all great suggestions, unfortunately, I work on 55th btwn Park and Lex and these are a bit out of my lunch area, but keep 'em coming and thanks!

Hey SushiBurger--- I work at 57th and 3rd so here come mine:

    1. Healthy and Halal Cart 55th and Park-- Get the Mixed Grill Combo (Lamb, Chicken and Kofte Burger) over rice or salad $6.00

    2. El Rey Del Sabor 60th and 3rd--- Plenty of choices where you can get away for under $6.00

    3. Asian Dragon-- 59th Between 2nd and 3rd Lunch combos @ $6.00 and $6.25

    4. Katagiri Japanese Grocery 59th Between 2nd and 3rd-- The Same as Cafe Zaiya BUT near us. Also, the oldest Japanese Grocery in NYC

    5. 57th and 3rd (I think, might be 56th) There is the cart, South east side of street, with a mom and pop team running it. They make Burgers for like 3.25, a chicken fingers combo for like 5.25 etc etc. They do really good fries, and a not bad gyro

    6. Papa Perrone Pizza Truck on 55th between Park and Mad-- Good Pizza and Rice balls, under $6.00

I hope that gives you some choices--- Yes, we seem to be leaning towards the "carts" selection but you wanted cheap so....

on fridays, you can get your taiwanese fried chicken from Cravings, on 53rd btw park and lex.

if you're willing to come west, jamaican dutchy, most of the mini-meals come in under $6. and dont be fooled by the word "mini". they give you a lot of food.

  8. I will reiterate my request that this year's end-of-the-year reader poll have a "Best $5 Lunch" category.

My picks for cheapskate lunches: Cafe Zaiya, chaat from Khodiar, pizza (from wherever), Kati Roll (although one roll will probably leave you hungry). I don't know much about NE Midtown, except that I'd probably get fat and broke from Chola's buffet if I worked there.

  9. Woorijip is also dirt cheap (also wrong part of town). I think that the boxed meals might be over $6, but they're deceptively enormous.

  10. Average price of a regular slice in Midtown: $ 3.50

    Medium Diet Coke: $ 1.50

The taste of an authentic NY style pizza served fresh from the oven: Priceless

I think you are overpaying for a regular slice. $3.50? Lots of places have tasty, plain slices for less, Christopher the Writer at Rock Plaza.

53rd & 6th Day cart should be $5 for chicken/lamb w. rice. At night, the price is still onyl $6. If you want pita sandwiches, they're $4.

Go to 2 Bros Pizza for their 2.75 special - two slices and can of soda. Nothing beats playing less than $3 for lunch...and dinner sometimes in my case. Haha.

  13. Ya, totally agree. But the Sbarro's next to the turnstiles downstairs jacks up the average price of a slice.
