Oh, one more:
Nickel Diner on Main St. Downtown between 5th/6th. Great Pulled Pork Sandwich and awesome Red Velvet Cake or Bacon Donuts.

Thanks for the recs, all!
Believe it or not, I really will be pretty much just driving around and eating - so I wasn't kidding about location being flexible. I am a sick, sick man, and will gladly sit in traffic for 2 hours if truly mind-blowing tacos are at the end of the journey.
I'll give you a full report of what I hit when I get back. Guelaguetza and Roscoe's are definitely on the to-do list. Does it matter which Guelaguetza location I hit? (I'm seeing a couple on ye olde google map).
Lastly, no Steveroller, Zach and I are not the same guy. More importantly: DocChuck and I are not the same guy, either.
Thanks again for all the suggestions. See you in 10 pounds or so.

chip Beef, you will do well. Take pictures and I expect a full report!

I'll second the Apple Pan.
It's a little over the limit, but I still have cravings for the Turkey Meatloaf Sandwich at the Coral Tree Cafe.
A lot of the farmer's markets have great Central and South American food (pupusas, tamales, etc) -- http://www.farmernet.com/events/cfms has a list of the markets.

i would say for killer shrimp tacos you MUST visit
"4 vientos" south of soto on olympic. it's the truck on the south side of the street across from the projects. haven't tried their new sit down rest. on the corner-i am sticking to the truck, where the magic started. by far the best shrimp tacos you will have this side of the frontera!!
buen provecho!!and also for a great counter lunch spot right in DT, where you will sit with cops, homeless, politicians etc is "Uncle John's" on 8th and Olive next to Kolori. try to char su pork and eggs!! a real LA find!!!
enjoy and welcome!!

I've got four lunches in Los Angeles next week, and location is almost entirely flexible.
If you were in my shoes, where would you go?
