For 8.50 at Jamaican Dutchy, I can get the small order (I have before) but you can actually feel their container is much heavier and with more chicken!
I definitely won't be going back to Jerk Pan, unless they add more meat or knock back a buck (Yea, I'm a cheapskate. Plus it isn't like their chicken is way better or anything). I rather walk further out West and pay the extra 50 cents where I get value and more food!
-
heck, you get a ton of food in the mini-meals, and that only runs $6.50 for the Jerk Chicken! only $5 for the stew or curry chicken. its more than enough food for me, and i eat a ton.

I don't even think Jerk Pan can compete with their Minis. Definitely better off trekking over to Dutchy.
I had the small and that plate totally filled me up and then some!! Jerk Pan barely filled me up... -
Yeah, I get mini's as well. Jerk Chicken is a bit more labor intense, esp if it's made over coals, so it costs a bit more.

I once made the mistake of getting a large from the dutchy. YES, I did eat it, but only once.
The small from the dutchy is more than enough for me (well, with a patty...)
-
Man, I could use a small jerk chicken for dinner from Dutchy. Haha. Or maybe the mini & patty like Adam so I don't gorge myself any bigger.
-
Yea the small from the Dutchy looks small until they hand it over and you realize it weighs like 3 pounds. They put a ton of rice and a couple of nice heartyy pieces of jerk chicken to go along with the steamed veggies and a plantain or two.

Not surprised, I've had a number of "Jamaican" cuisine experiences in my day and they've all tasted like Boston Market with a tangy sauce glaze.
Not saying the Jerk Pan is that bad but the point is not many can do it right- like the Dutchy, even their deserts rock.

yum, Dutchy dishes out some HEAT. I split a mini with the lady (just to try it out) after work and we were both sweating. it was awesome and i was getting quite full on 3/4 of it.
despite being slightly bummed out by your review, i'm going to try the jerk pan next week anyway to see how it fares.

No doubt. Give it a try. We all got different tastes.
I expect better portion-size though when I know Dutchy doesn't skimp on their platters. I'm sure I won't be the only one complaining about the meager chicken pieces. Their chicken tastes alright BUT it really doesn't measure up to Dutchy IMO. If the taste was way better than Duthcy, then I could understand the portion. That was not the case for me. I'm also use to eating spicy Jerk chicken. My friend's bf one time was making jerk pork and he deliberately used a whole jar of jerk sauce in it. Insane. I was sweating the whole time eating it but it was good stuff! -
There are a TON of places that serve jerk chicken and other West Indian fare in my neighborhood so it's not something that I, personally, seek out as often when I'm in the city. Though, I wouldn't mind some jerk chicken. I smell it cooking at this one place everytime I walk home from the train station.

Sounds like Brooklyn? Or possibly the outskirts of Queens. Ah, Brooklyn since you said TONS of places...

I wanted halal today, saw the line at XPL and then decided to go to Jerk Pan across the street instead, on 48th and Park. Why wait on line for something I had plenty of times and not even tried the Jamaican cart in my neck of the woods yet? The line moved fairly smoothly. It took about 2-3 minutes per person.
The rice & beans was fairly flavorful. The steamed vegetables are so-what standard - cabbage with carrots, corn, and peas - frozen veg. medley most likely. My definite complaint is their chicken serving! I ordered a small and got barely 2 pieces? What's going on here? I had a drumstick chopped in half and barely a thigh. All this for $8? The only pluses were their tasty rice and not getting so full that I go into a coma.
POOR imitation of the Dutchy...
