ID for BEER?

KD1005

Yesterday I was at the Jubilee market at 99 John, and I grabbed a few beers when I was getting groceries..

At the register I was asked for ID! Me.. 50 years old with white hair! I refused and had him take back the bottles.

What is with this? Never before has anyone asked me for ID.. (even when I was 12)

Same age, and I get carded too. It's a legal requirement, and stores can get major fines if they don't ask for ID. Suck it up and hand over the ID/license. It's not taking anything away from you. The store owners don't make the rules, so don't get mad at them.

I cannot believe it. When? When was this law passed? is it NY State or CITY?

I was born here and have purchased plenty of beer at supermarkets without ID. I don't believe Jubilee is required by law to ask me.

I will have to go on a mission and buy six-packs at various places to see if I am asked for ID LOL..

  3. ESNY

Well congrats for standing up to the man. You're prize is the lack of a six-pack and an inflated sense of self.

?? what? OH I left off the part about not really wanting the beer (a Becks Dark and a Sierra Nevada IPA) because I was already drinking Bloody Marys, and I don't carry ID on me anyway so I was not going to buy them if he insisted on it...

So.. Here I am looking for some stories of if it happened to you or not and all I get are insults..

Well.. I hope you're happy now!! trying to bum me out..

KD1005, instead of lamenting ESNY's "insults" you could just mock him for his blatant grammatical transgression. Unless you are, in fact, prize.

    :P

Also, it is a little amusing that you posted here on Midtown Lunch about being carded. I'm at the age where being carded is ridiculously flattering, even though I think I've looked my age since I turned 25 (a while ago).

  6. I don't think there's any requirement that a deli card each and every person. But I've been to bars where their policy is that everyone who walks in the door gets carded. And a point of fact, these tend to be bars that have a history of getting busted for serving underage patrons. So it's possible Jubilee market has run afoul of the long arm of the law recently.

  7. The law is actually that ANYONE that appears to be under 35 be ID'd.

Jubilee on John St. got popped last year for selling cigarrettes to a minor and actually lost the right to sell smokes for I believe 6 months, so you may understand why they may be a bit nervous. If they get cought again, it would be bad.

    accept it and move on.

    a) I never carry my drivers license.. unless I am driving .. which I am not.

    b) Jubilee is not bar

    c) I am a "prize"

    d) went somewhere else and got a cool 5 LITER HEINEKEN keg!! woo! woo! no id!

"Also, it is a little amusing that you posted here on Midtown Lunch about being carded"

err why is it amusing? because you were just thinking about it?

where else could I post but here and get such a knowledgeable group of NYers?

It's entirely possible that the deli owner didn't know the ass-to-human age conversion chart.

I'm fairly certain the law merely states you cannot sell to anyone under the age of 21. No "if the person looks under 35" clauses -- how can you enforce an opinion? -- just "only people of age may purchase alcohol/cigarettes/hayjays in the back room".
