Thought I'd finally report back...
We wound up going to Under the Volcano (12 E 36th St.). Cool vibe, decent chips & guac, and affordable beer. They also have a wide selection of tequilas. I do love me some Tequila.

Mamacita - time to add this one to your queue for a write-up :)

don't forget Under the Volcano's sister bar across the street, The Gingerman.
No happy hour specials, limited food selection, and packed with the after work crowd. Still one of the best beer bars in Manhattan.

I'm going to Pronto Pizza for a "Big Gulp" to go, can't wait.

I don't drink much...in Midtown. ;)
I have read Mamacita's posts religiously, and just checked through them again before posting this in the forums. I'm looking for a great happy hour deal (we all work in publishing = not highrollers) and the occasion is a farewell party for one of our favorite coworkers. So, I'd like it to be a comfortable place to chat for a while and a nice ambiance. We like classic cocktails and the coworker is a vegetarian musician. That rules out bad 80s music and burgers.
Any help guys?
