come to Rattle & Hum and meet your fellow midtown lunchers

Well, Rudy's had both cheap drinks and cheap/free food, but it's a hole in the wall i.e. not a place you can get a martini, and that's kinda why I like it.
-
what about going to beacon and doing the sit-at-the-bar $20 special of a burger & 2 drinks?
-
The Third Floor Cafe is great--unlimited katsu and fried chicken and beer (bottled) for around $18.
[WHOA--that worked!!]

Wait--the Monday wing special at 1849 is no more???
[noodle] I guess you mean now that it's Tuesday. Wings are still on from 3-6 pm, too early for you. Their nachos are some of the best in town still.

3rd flr cafe does also the red/white wine with it's AYCD.

Avoid McCormick & Schmick's unless you are 2 people or fewer. The bar area is too small for a large happy hour.
Also, the drinks are too expensive. I've seen MidtownLunch HappyHour in person. You'll be in sticker shock when done drinking.
They have the most expensive $30 dollar $2.95 cheeseburger (the burger and 3 beers).
The same kinda goes for 3rd Fl Cafe (if you stay past the last call). I think we spent $200 that night (on top of the $18/pp happyhour). However, the free food makes it (sorta) worth it.

how about the Croton Reservoir Tavern 108 W. 40th St. its from 5 - 9pm
$5 Flavored Martinis Margaritas & well drinks
$3 Bottled beer
$6 wineI usually go on mondays when you get a free app for ever 2 drinks you buy.

Goodness, what's the vibe there? From a look at their website I was a bit turned off. Are the $3 beers only bud/bud light? What kinda appetizers?

Thank you very much for all of the quick replies! I'll look into the suggested places now.
As far as M&S, we would only get the $5 well specials but that is a moot point.
Third Floor Cafe would be a good spot but friends who aren't on time will probably be too close to really take advantage of the AYCD and will force us to go some place else after 8.
Still looking further into the options.

I'll always love Rudy's, they will get loud and crowded. But if you have someone go early and score a booth that isn't a problem. Nearby is 123 burger shot beer/Mr.Biggs/Hibernia/Gaff/mercury bar/blue ruin/bull moose/Dave's/ etc... Hallo berlin for sausage, plus 99 cent pizza and Papaya dog closer to the subway terminal.

Thanks again for all of the suggestions. We ended up at Calico Jacks. 3 appetizers and about 14 drinks later and the damage came out to $57 before tip. We mostly were drinking their margaritas. Only bad beat was $8 for a virgin Pina Colada (stop smirking there).

Long time lurker here.
I'm planning to have meet up with some friends after work for drinking and hanging out from 7-10. We were going to head to 1849 yesterday. The plan was originally:
1) Rudy’s Bar and Grill, 627 9th Ave.
2) 1849 Bar.
3) Gyu-Kaku Midtown, 805 3rd Ave., 2nd Floor,
4) McCormick & Schmick’s Seafood Restaurant,
But M&S, and Gyu-Kaku both have happy hours which end at 6 and start again at 9 so those are out. 1849 is less desirable now that Monday's wings special is over.
Are there any other places I'm overlooking?
In order of preference, we are looking for cheap drinks, cheap and decent food, either Midtown or Downtown.
Thank you for your suggestions. (I've looked over many of the happy hour articles by Mamacita, that is how I made the first list)
